Cork Southcoast Aerial

My parents are going mmds with chorus, and not going to bother with Cork southcoast any more. Would the southcoast aerial be any use for picking up DTT (dvb-t ??) when/if it arrives in our cork area?

    thanks...

Point it at Spur Hill :)

If you mean a South Coast digital antenna , That is no good for terrestrial. These are simply a small satellite dish. Can point at astra 2 for sat. reception using existing s.coast digital decoder (simply a dvb-s satellite box). Dish is too small for reliable reception of all transponders though, . 60 cm +needed.
Some one may come to collect the digital box, or they may not...
If analogue , do as Watty says and aim for Spur Hill, or maybe Mulliganish.

Thanks for the replies, of course this was almost going to mean a follow up q :) This is the analogue southcoast system

So is it just analogue coming from spur hill at the moment ? When DTT gets rolled out accross the country will that come from spur hill aswell ? which I believe will have some fta and analogue aerials can still be used.

Does it matter which side of the aerial points towards spurhill ? Where would it be pointing to right now for southcoast ?( at least that will tell me which is the right way around )

Out of curiousity anyone got a pic of that southcoast sat ? I'm sure I'm seen something like those around but didnt realise it was southcoast digital. I also taught the southcoast digital was mmds and not sat ?

Its the tiny white dish, on a pole, way up off the chimney and looks like it has blown forwards so facing the ground some what.I'd say it will be a while before DTT comes on board though down here, am I right Rippy? Problem apparently is with Cork, the amount of relays due to all the hills whereas up country, one major transmitter covers a lot more ground.
You can still use that aerial to pick up UHF off Mulaghanish for TV3 and TG4 or as Watty said, Spur Hill. Remember a replacement aerial is only 15 euro in Dwyers or the cheaper Yagi version is only 7 euro.

    August /September maybe.

I'd guessed the OP was using analogue as the other system is not an Aerial as such.

I beleive part of the deal of getting 11.7Ghz for Digital (uniquely in Ireland) is that they have to switch off the Analogue system, which was orignally illegal.

thanks for the replies and info, I suppose when southcoast does drop the analogue it will be handy though just to repoint that aerial to spur hill/mulliganish, its already hooked up to a splitter/booster which sends it around the house, so at least in the bedrooms could pick up any free to-air channels.
If does transmitters got dtt all the better.

    .

I know the tenders etc are going around at moment but still believe it when I see it, would be surprised if we saw anything in 2008.

Where are you currently receiving RTE/TV3/TG4 from (SCtv analogue are not providing those). Your existing UHF aerial for these may be OK without having to do anything.
you would also have to give a more specific location too when looking for any reception advice, especially considering its hilly Co. Cork.

there is no such thing as a South Coast aerial. It isn't any different from UHF aerials (depending on area) used for reception of RTE/TV3 or TG4. Some UHF aerials cover the whole UHF TV spectrum (such as the Grid type) others cover part of the UHF spectrum (grouped) - these would have a colour code on the end - Red (low uhf) Yellow (mid UHF) or green (high UHF). A yellow colour code aerial would for example give poor results on transmissions covered by a green grouped aerial (as used for the existing SpurHill analogue) Without knowing what type of aerial you have at present and your location, etc its not possible for anyone to speculate if it could be recommended for DTT where you are.

They get rte1,2 tv3/tg4, bbc1/2 ,itv and ch4. all coming from the aerial on the roof. Everynow and then they would get the southcoast ads instead of normal ads.

Location is catherlag cork ( just back off the top of the hill looking over the waterford road).

I see you just posted more info at the same time I did, I'm not sure what type of uhf aerial it is (I can get a pic later perhaps). So from what your saying, could it be picking up some channels from southcoast and others from say spurhill?

If they get rte from it, theres no point touching it. That one aerial gets all youcan get anyways so no point changing a thing.

Those tenders are for the 3 Commercial Mux and also for the Misnamed RTE International on Satellite (Astra 2D is hardly "International").

The Mux A or Mux 1 or RTE Mux is a separate well under way project.

I wonder does Comreg / BCI know that? Normally Analogue Deflector operators lose licence if they "opt out" their own adverts.

The 'ads' are only their own announcements (asking people to pay up etc).

The cable companies have done the same thing in the past -- look at this:

I'd imagine you have a Grid type aerial similar to this

    108012fl-UHF-BB-Gitter-Aeri.jpg

and you are receiving RTE1,2,TV3,Tg4 from Spur Hill on that off-beam, but satisfactoraly, considering (A) Grid Type aerial - with horizontal polarisation - has a broad acceptance angle and (B) signals from Spur Hill would be fairly strong (if line of sight)

Yup thats the one :), so the UK channels are coming via southcoast then. Probably explains why the Irish channels are much clearer.

I'd say there is line of sight up there. So do ya reckon that setup would be fine untouched then to get dtt if it ever came from spurhill?
