IJA is the official judo body of Ireland. JI is a break away group, which is trying to promote the sport in their own way.

So this mean only members the Irish Judo Association can compete in a major international judo tournament? if I train at a club under Judo Ireland its not possible?

JI are not recognised by the Irish olympic committee, which means the cannot compete in the Olympics, im not sure about world and european championships, but competitions like british open etc, i think they can still compete, Great britain has 2 governing bodies, both are recognised by the british olympic committe makinjg it possible for all members to compete in all competition afaik

personally i have great sympathy with JI, there seemed to be a huge cliche within IJA that pretty much looked after themselves. I was at a AGM a few years back it was like asking the Zimbabwean election committee for results:eek:

The differences between the IJA and JI would be imperceptible to somebody new to the sport. The difference is mainly in macro-organisation, the IJA has been shown to be bureaucratic and corrupt while the JI has maintained its ethos of accountability. The good clubs within the IJA tend to operate without any input from the organisation.

It shouldn't be a consideration for an athlete or wannabe judo player; a more important decision is the quality of the training on the mat The logo is not so important. Very few people in Ireland actually compete at any tournaments outside of ireland that aren't juniors or actually on the national squad by the way.

I'm not affiliated currently to either organisation but I would be JI-friendly.

How did the split come about?

    Why the interest?

True, I was intrigied my self by Irish Muay Thai politics. Basically, with regard to the judo split, 2 prominent members of Irish Judo tried to make progress within the IJA but to no avail so they started their own group.

Does it make a difference with one I join? can I train in both IJA and JI cubs?

Does anyone Know who that garda judo club is affiliated to? I did Judo about 15 years ago and there was only one judo association.

You will be able to train in any club. It's not important. Clubs don't care. It's just the competing part that each org requires you to be apart of.
