Just got the onkyo 605 yesterday.

Connected an optical out from the sky hd box to the amp but only get sound when the program is in dolby digital otherwise i get nothing. Well sound from the tv but none from the amp.

Is this normal or should i be getting stereo going through the amp when dolby digital isn't availible?

    Thanks

You should get digital stereo all the time

Any advice on the settings i should use?

Only seems to works for the Dolby soundtracks. Like the rugby match on skysports just there was working and it said dolby 2.0 on the amp.

Must be waiting for a dolby signal or something.

Only thing I can think of is the sound settings on the digibox unless the onkyo is only configured to accept dolby digital

Yeah i checked there and turned the optical out to dolby digital. Maybe if i hook the hdmi up to the amp aswell and see if that works. Thx for ur help anyway. I may give sky a buzz or maybe ppl who have the onkyo 605 can lead the way!

Yeah the HDMI carries digital audio so that should work too.

I recently purchased the 705 receiver. You should have the skyhd hdmi cable hooked up to amp. The Stereo signals go through hdmi fine, dd signals must go through optical. Skyhd dont do dd through HDMI unfortunately. This causes a 2 sec delay in receiving sound audio when you switch from stereo channel to dd channel. But its worth the wait!! Sound is terrific.

On a side issue, not related to your sound issues. There is a firmware upgrade available on the Onkyo site for the 605 receiver. You might want to have a look at it.

Also here is great for plently of info:

The optical out on the SKY box carries stereo sound (always if set to NORMAL) or switches between DD 5.1 and stereo/DS depending on the programme content (if set to Dolby Digital). Therefore there is ALWAYS sound output on the optical.

I would suggest that your amp is set to look for Dolby only (or DTS or whatever) on that particular optical input. Try setting it to "Auto" or similar (I'm not familiar with the Onkyo - I have a Denon).

The HDMI output from the SKY box carries stereo only - no DD 5.1
