Hey, have noticed over the last week or so that ads for RTÉ have started to appear on TV3... Bit odd if you ask me, allowing your main competitor advertise on your own channel, anyone else notice this?

As far as I know European competition rules dictate that broadcasters can't refuse to transmit a competitor's ad. To the best of knowledge TV3 can insist RTE doesn't mention specific shows or programme times, but other than that must treat them the same as they would any other advertiser.

The RTE ads have been on TV3 for a good few months, if not a year. I thought it was strange but to be honest, TV3 are getting paid, and I hardly think RTE are getting all of TV3's viewers from those ads alone.

TV3 surely don't have that many viewers to lose. They get an audience for perhaps Coronation Street and Emmerdale. Anything else?

These ads are running on Channel 6 and Living also.

In a roundabout way these ads mention specific RTE shows, it is odd to see gil grisom in an RTE ad during an episode of CSI on Channel 6!

They also have ads on some of the Independent Radio Stations.

I suppose the ads are supposed to advertise the RTE Group not just their TV or Radio Service.

It's weird all right. Could RTE run ads for TV3? Would they have to? Could you run an ad saying 'switch over now - this program is rubbish!'?

TV3 can run ads of RTÉ if they like but not the type that you have mentioned.

I'm sure they get well paid for it.

You were able to identify that RTE (point for rte) are advertising on TV3 (point for tv3) and you have created a thread about it and others have noticed it too and can identify both RTE and TV3. So both stations have benefited from this successful marketing!;)

TBH I can't see any reason why RTE or TV3 need to do general ads for themselves, everyone knows about them. I can understand plugging specific shows and so on, but the brand name? What's the point?

RTÉ have got around this by using clips from CSI and other shows with RTÉ personalities. However I think that TG4 do a better job of it with their Ros Na Run/Cold Case Advert. But then they actually got the actors from Cold Case to appear in the Advert.

And RTÉ seem to think that brand is important hence the recent change in channel names. Network 2, 2FM, LyricFM and RnaG remember them!!!

Also everyone knows SKY why should they advertise.
