Not sure that the people on a Photography forum are best placed to answer that.
I certainly don't know any who use it.

Photoshop CS3 was around 850E the last time I priced it in Ireland. If you can source it in the UK you might do better with the sterling exchange rate. AFAIK, however, Amazon will not deliver software to Ireland.

Photoshop Elements 6.0 is around 109E as is Paintshop Pro XI or whatever Corel is calling it lately both from PC World.

One of my flickr friends living in England uses Elements & his stuff is brilliant. You don't need the expensive programs to get great results! PM me if you want a link to his stuff, I don't want to link it here without his permission! :)

If you've a new camera model and you plan to shoot raw, then you need CS3. Adobe don't produce updates to camera raw for CS2 any more. Just something you need to consider.

Other than that, I find Lightroom brilliant for processing my photos. Something to consider.

Also, most camera come with their own software for processing.

He's already said he's going with PSE 6.0 and I am pretty sure that they are fully up to date with RAW in that package.

OP I also use ACDSee Pro which has a handy enough editor if you're not going playing with layers. I think it's about 120 dollars so relatively cheap to download at the moment.

Not really. A RAW converter comes with the camera package (Digital Photo Professional) and there are a few independent converters available for free (e.g. Raw Therapee). CS3 is nice to have but you don't need it.

The photoshop range on micromail.ie -

Title, ex VAT@21%, and inc VAT@21%
Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 Macintosh (forthcoming) €74.00 €89.54
    Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 & Premiere Elements 4.0 Windows Bundle €125.00 €151.25
    Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 Windows €83.00 €100.43
Adobe Photoshop Extended CS3 Student Edition Mac €176.03 €213.00
Adobe Photoshop Extended CS3 Student Edition Windows €176.03 €213.00
    Adobe Photoshop Lightroom for Windows/Macintosh €249.00 €301.29
    Adobe Photoshop Extended CS3 Windows €1069.00 €1293.49
    Photoshop CS3 Windows €689.00 €833.69

You could also try the Gimp for free - differing opinions on it but then again its like asking an open question of is nikon or canon better? Is photoshop or gimp better? - well i don't know but i do know the gimp won't set you back €800 euros. I also think elements is probably a reasonable start down the post processing direction too.

    Cheers.

http://ufraw.sourceforge.net/ free raw conversion - also as a plug in to the gimp (see above post). Supports canon, nikon, olympus, pentax, kodak, etc.. Also allows some manipulation if your needs are meagre.
