is this a good camera? i see it's on komplett with an 18-55mm lens for 530 euro, is this a good price.

i'm looking to get a camera and was willing to spend around 400 euro on a point and shoot, but then i saw this and said 130 euro isn't that much extra to be paying to get the better quality and bigger sensor size quality photos you get from a DSLR.

how does it compare to say the likes of a nikon D70 i've used one of them for a bit and liked what it did.

i was looking at www.7dayshop.com and i can get the 400D + 18-55mm kit and a 16gig sandisk CF card for about 610 euro all inclusive of shipping.

i don't mind buying online - has the best deals - but i'd prefer to keep the search inside europe to avoid the worry of customs duties + taxes etc.

the 400D is an ideal start dslr - you have a budget to stick to i guess but be aware 450D is out now too

The nikon d70 has been replaced now by the d80 - these would be considered a class up from the 400D - kinda the same class as the 40D - prosumer/semi-pro - 400D is consumer

try www.cameralabs.com - good site for camera reviews with excellent video reviews of all these cameras

well i don't really have a budget but i wouldn't really go over 700 euro for a body and lens i wouldn't like to go out and buy a 400D then next week it's obsolete (i know i'm talking technology here and it all goes obsolete at some stage) and would like a bit of future proofing.

7dayshop have a 450D with 18-55mm lens for around 650 euro which i could be able to afford but would have to wait til next months wages :p.

The only thing is, once you get a dslr, you'll be drooling over new lenses all the time :D
I got a 400D about a year ago and love the quality, you get a nicer sense of depth with a dSLR... something I thought was missing from digital when I only used a P&S.
I paid close to €800 for mine, so I'd say €530 sounds like a pretty good deal... unless there's something better around now.

Something to keep in mind is the bulky size of dSLRs, having to carry it in a bag rather than an inside jacket pocket means I don't take mine out as much as I would a P&S.
In some situations you might feel like a bit of a tool (self-concious) carrying it around or unzipping your camera bag and all that hassle when you just want to take a quick photo of something you find vaguely interesting.
I've no regrets about buying it, and the quality is excellent (especially if you replace the kit lens), but if it's going to be your only/main camera you've got to think about the practical side of things... like would you take it out on the town to take pics of your friends or whatever.

Bought one for the old man for his 60th B/Day in camera exchange last week. They have a deal on at the minute, camera, kit lens, little bag for it and memory card for €680 with a €60 cashback on it from Canon.

Was pleased enough. No waiting around for post etc. ad it same day.

I have the 350D myself and I think either are a great DSLR to get you started.

where is camera exchange? how big is the memory card, i intend to shoot in RAW so i don't want to have the limitation of taking like 50 photos before i have to wipe the card clean.

Sth. Great George's St or Trinity St. Dublin.

As far as I remember the card was a 1GB card. PLenty to be working away with for RAW images. (Depending of course on how snap happy you are)

k i was around town yesterday and had a good pawing of both the 400D and the 450D as well as a 40D that an over eager salesman tried to sell.

the 450D has drawn me into it, it just felt more of an extension of my hand if you know what i mean.

i was playing the coy shopper, i was like hmm i don't have the money now until my next pay cheque comes in next week but i will definitely be back.

10 minutes from getting in the door i had an order confirmation on 7dayshop.com for a 450D with 18-55mm and a 16gig CF card all for 750euros.

    :pac:

Im thinking of buying my 400D on Ebay from the states. The overall package looks great, 3 lenses,tripod/mini,bag,cf card and so on. 560euro including shipping. Just wondering if anybody would have a rough idea of what i would have to pay on customs/duties ? cant figure it out myself

I got stuck with a charge of 120euros for a similar deal from a US eBay seller (could be the same place maybe, ShopSunshine I think it was called). Anyways, all those little "extras" that came with the camera were complete ****e. Looked like they came from a pound shop, so you may want to reconsider were you buy from, as in my case, the extras definitely were not worth it.

Thanks gloobag. I have seen that shop sunshine. will stay clear of them. Their is different deals on it,some with three lens (canon). 120euro isnt as bad as i thought for duty cosidering some of the deals. As you said some of the extras were crap, but not looking at the extras the deals do look pretty good. Anybody with anymore advice from buying online in states before i decide on buying next weekend? Would be great.

Jessops in the UK have the 400D EFS 18-55mm lens for GBP 394.99, approx
EUR 491.00. You don't have the worry about customs as it's within EU.
After the Canon cash back GBP45/EUR 56 offer it works out at a pretty
good price. The recent strength of the euro against the pound makes
    the UK a good option.

I'd avoid getting seriously large memory cards, better bet is to get several
2GB cards. At least if one card gets lost or fails you're not loosing all your
    photos.

Yeah had a look at the jessops site. They have a decent enough deal on the 400D. Im thinking maybe best to buy from them instead of the hassle from the states, and can always get another lense when i feel the need to. They dont mention anything about delivery to Ireland.Only N.Ireland. Cant see it on the site.

It will cost you around 10 pounds for delivery to Irish Republic. I bought from them, somehow online order and options for shipping to Ireland didn't work so I had to ring them for manual order.

Not sure if they honour discount coupon codes over the phone but you can ask. Received my parcel within 2 days from the day it left Jessops so that's not bad. They used Parceline courier and the items were well packed.

It's only a one-time and brief experience so I can't say much about them but sales and after sales support were helpful placing and tracking my order.
