There is no legal distance. As long as you have the shot - take it.
Obviously if the fox is out of range and you're not likely to kill it, then don't take the shot and risk injuring the animal.

No point in firing a shotgun 70 yards at a fox.

I heard it was 50 yards. Iknow you have to shoot in upper body with max of 2 shots. Thanks for reply.

Behind the shoulder is the best place to ensure a quick kill, apart from a headshot. There is no limit on shots fired on vermin with rifle or shotgun, this max 2 shots thing is actually a max 3 shots limit which is placed on game.

Tbh, you kill it with the first shot if at all possible. If you don't, you shoot it until it's dead, however many shots it takes.

Was just wondering has this got to do with the incident that happened in milltown golf course a few weeks back..

    Has it ??????

If not you will get some good information off the lads here

If it's over the Milltown GC incident, then there was a lot of hot air over that, when nothing illegal or dangerous happened and that was nobody's business but the owners of the GC, on privately owned ground, and there really is absolutely nothing further to be said on that.

Then again, there are plenty of areas backing Dublin 14 up into the mountains where there's a lot of hunting done.

There used to be a guideline given that you should be sixty feet from private property or a public road. To be honest though, it's advisory, not legally binding and the only thing to do is to be responsible. Avoid shots over more than 200 yards at night, 300 in the day, with a suitable rifle, ensure a proper backstop and that there's nobody between you and the target, avoid headshots, take a heart and lung aim instead (just behind shoulder), and if the fox is hit but doesn't drop, hit him again until he does, taking proper care to avoid irresponsibility.

suspicious because a girl can shoot.;)

Nah, all too happy to see girls shooting (though I think you'll find if you join any of the college rifle clubs that you're far from the only one ;)), just that the first message without the follow-up was a tad suspicious, sounded like we were being baited, which is something we're all too used to. You seem genuine though, so welcome aboard. Out of interest, what are you intending to shoot foxes with?

    .22lr

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

It is inadvisable to shoot foxes with a .22lr. If you are going to, call them very close, definitely under 80 yards, and if you can get it to 50, do so. If you're good enough to take a headshot very comfortably (and this is questionable, for most people), do so. If not, try get a frontal centre hit on the chest. If you're planning on shooting more than the very occasional opportune fox, you'd do well to upgrade to something more potent. .17HMR and .22WMR are slightly better, but not optimal, for best results you'll want a centrefire, like a .223REM, .222REm, .220 SWIFT, .204Ruger, .17REM or .243WIN. What else are you doing with it? To keep with cheaper rounds, if you do a good bit of target and the like, the .17HMR or .22WMR are your best bet, but you wouldn't kill a fox beyond about a hundred yards, and you need to be careful at that range.

with a .22lr and CCI Stinger bullets you can easily bring down a fox if shot is properly placed
i even noticed it to do better than .22 magnum - no need for 2nd shot -- when with the mag if you are bit off the right place need to go for 2nd shot

( up to 50 yards) if any further wont take the shot -- i just hate having to take 2nd shot-- in my opinion its the worst part of hunting :(

Most rounds will kill most things if properly placed, the only thing is to allow a margin for error. Tbh, with a .22lr, there's no real margin for error. The Stingers seem nice, but when it comes down to it, it's not going to pack the punch downrange that the WMR will, or the HMR a little above it. I agree, in a perfect world nobody should have to take a second shot, but it's a duty you have when you recognise that you've made a mistake. Unfortunate, but all we can do is put in the hours and hours of practice to make sure they're as few as possible.

I think they are a little confused, fox is vermin, not game, therefore no max shot limit applies but use common sense, ie don't light it up like a christmas tree. Have respect for the quarry and you'll do fine.
