I just saw an ad for Virgin's new mixitup service. It is effectively pretty much anything on demand via a set top box. How long until UPC could offer anything like that?

Virgin and UPC are completely different companies so it doesn't follow thant one will copy the other. However, VM has proven that there is a demand for video on demand services and that it is a niche that Sky can't really provide. Therefore UPC should definitely be trying to go down the same route. There was talk on this forum about the roll out of a new set-top box which would seem to support more interactive services but I haven't heard anything confirmed from UPC.

Is that why they have different names? ;)

I know they're different. My question is can UPC offer similar standard products to good cable operators?

The DVR box and its non-dvr equivalent (not sure if they're giving those out yet) are set up to do all the fancy interactive stuff you want. I'm not sure if they're going to actively encourage customers with the PACE box to switch to the new one, though, although maybe the plan is to get them all using the DVR.

Could UPC offer the same stuff as Virgin? Yes - they could. Will they? Probably but as with all things in Ireland you can be sure it'll take a bit longer to manifest itself.
