I've got a friend who's recently been out alot of days due to sickness. Her mom's spoken to her about it, and told her that they won't let her sit the exam if she misses out on school.

I was under the impression that the exams were state-run, not school run? She's already registered and stuff, all she has to do now to complete it is actually sit the exam, but now she's worried she can't.

    Is this true?

Thanks everyone, and good luck this year:)

Even though Neon-Circles' post is enough, could I get a second opinion? It never hurts:)

When my brother was in third year, he missed an entire term of school, from crimbo to easter, and then when he came back, he wasn't in school full time for a few weeks. He had no problem with the school about doing the exams. In fairness, it's not up to the school wether he should be able for them or not. As well as that, there are people who have been in school all that time, they haven't done any work at all and they're oing to be allowed sit the exams. To be honest, I find your friend's predicament to be a joke on the school's behalf.

I don't think it makes a difference, her Mum could just have been saying that to get her to go to school. I know a girl who was in my year and was always out. She'd be in for 3 days and then out for 2 weeks... And she was able to sit her JC no problem. This girl didn't even turn up for most of her Junior cert, She came in for the first 3 days and that was it.

Maybe her Mum meant that she won't be able for the exam and won't do well if she doens't go to school.

So long as you're registered to do the exams in that exam centre, should be grand. There's no state requirement that you have to be in school to sit the exams, so it's just something her school are probably telling her to try scare her into going into school more.

Just your school talking crap trying to make you come to school, my school pulls this stuff the whole time.

The school cannot stop her sitting the exams, but the National Education Welfare board have to be informed by law if a child misses over 20 days in a school year.

Your friend's mum should be getting a visit from the NEWB if the school are complying with their legal responsibility. Since her absences are presumably easily verified as being because of illness there should be no problem.

Permission to sit the exam is not the school's business, though in theory they could request her to sit it in another centre. The red tape involved in that would be colossal so unless there is a nut of a Principal who likes that kind of thing, it's unlikely to happen.

yeah she can do the exam, but yeah if she has been out more than 20 days which are unexplained they will be in kinda trouble.
