    Hi,

I posted a q here recently about southcoast, Watty you had told me that southcoast will soon cease their analog service (and that even their digital service might be in trouble). Just wondering if you've any sources/links to this info.
Or is the analogue service ceasing due to analog in the UK going next year ?

    thanks....

I assume since they're picking up Welsh over-spill they will have no legitimate source of analogue BBC1, 2, ITV Wales and Channel 4/S4C once the Welsh analogue transmitter switches off. I would assume therefore, they'd be switching off their analogue feed at that time.

I'm not sure what the story is about their digital service, but it's a commercial venture operating in a very competitive market i.e. up against UPC and Sky Digital. From what I gather, it's going strong though!

    thanks,

the c4 reception is pretty poor, and I'm sure they are re-transmitting it from sky, I've often seen it go off and then see the sky epg come up channels changing!

It is from a Sky box alright. Either that or S4C i suppose.

You'd kinda wonder about the legality of that...

Might be more appropriate if this was moved to Terrestrial? The SC Analogue service is not Cable or MMDS, its technically the same as the terrestrial provision of RTE,TV3, TG4

It's an odd one, but I think it's more appropriate to this forum really as it's no more a true terrestrial TV service than MMDS is.

Southcoast is licensed re-distribution / re-transmission service. So, in effect it's basically doing what a cable company does on MMDS or Cable only with very few channels and using UHF transmitters.

It's still CATV (Community Antenna Television) i.e. picking up signals with a single central antenna and distributing them.

Also SCTV Digital their new service is MMDS.

By 'true terrestrial service' I presume you mean UHF/VHF conventional broadcast? Southcoast always denied that there operation was this. Thus the creation of the term 'deflector'.

It's not doing what a cable system does. You could argue the same of RTE's transmissions.

The term CATV is used primarily to describe an actual Cable TV system. South Coast are not this. In fact they were one of the biggest opponents of MMDS and are on record on this.

And now they're operating what is an MMDS system - except on different frequencies. What a country. I would advise that it would be moved to terrestrial.:)

They're a TV redistribution service, not a broadcaster. That in my mind makes them appropriate to this forum, not terrestrial broadcasting.

SCTV has to close the so called Deflectors and do their digital service only. It's ironically MMDS, what they was very opposed to. Except 11.7 to 12.5GHz instead of 2.5GHz.

The Deflectors where really illegal transmitters using CATV tech. They always were essentially "wireless cable operators" like MMDS, except in the TV band (illegally till Political Tomfoolery got them a legal repreive till DTT).

SCTV stuff is really in future going to be more in the Cable/MMDS. But if it is about UHF aerials and cabling and UHF reception, then terrestrial. None of that should be much longer.

Exept that they don't call it that Watty. As I said - only in this country. Makes you wonder. If only for that political tomfoolery, how fard advanced would wirelss technology be in this country now? But we'll never know unfortunately.:)
