    Hi,

Currently getting an extension done. Just wondering what is the minimum insulation the builder should be putting in the attic. Had a look at the rolls of insulation he had and its fiber glass (I think) and 100mm thick. Any help would be grateful.

    Thanks,

I think its .22u, in terms of fibreglass its about 300mm i think, or 100mm of polyiso which is a rigid board.

just to add that to get the best result the space between the joists is filled first and then the layer above the joists is cross-laid across the joists to reduce cold bridging

Thanks ircoha... Can I ask in the case you mentioned what would you do if I was to put down some flooring. Also could you tell me what people do if there is lots of down lights in the attic. Its a bungalow house I have..

    Thanks,

Oh no, not another surrogate or other wise attic extension:)

It all depends on what u want to do afterwards with the space. is it for storage? do u have the height to lose another 4 inches

Assuming the joists are 225 deep then u can fill in between the joists from here size wise http://www.uvalue.ie/uvalue.pdf
and then counter batten with 100 by 50 joists to give u the additional 100.
Your flooring will go on top

Now to the downlighters which I presume are in the ceiling below the attic.

They need to be boxed out with fire resistant material to stop the FG falling in on them.
The folks over in electrical may be able to help with the requisite spec.
