Go about it the other way man, everything that isn't classed as vermin and isn't in open season is to be treated as protected. Information of that sort is easier to put together than using exhaustive lists of protected species. If you start trawling those before long you're reading into exotics an the lot.

In a few months the best available for the plate will be woodpigeons milling cornfields, I know they have a seasons but when damaging crops they can be shot. Than from September on it's ducks.

Danish friend of mine shoots and eats crows all the time - in Denmark not here. I know a Scottish guy who shoots cormorants, feeds them to his kids telling them they're "Sea Geese":D

Hard to beat pan fried breast of woodpigeon!

Agreed. Had some the other night. Good oil, some black pepper, soy sauce, and throw red wine in the pan, serve with soda farls and loads of butter. Hard to beat for quick and delicious. :)

A bit off topic, but going to have Quail tomorrow, any suggestion on cooking?
Was thinking of stuffed with a plum and/or olives

    As for the topic,
    crows and magpipes as vermin

and then the birds with a season in the late auteum and winter

Crows ,if shot young enough.[Like next month May 23rd onwards in the UK,Rook shooting] are very good eating. They are known as squabs or branchers,as they are old enough to leave the nests, but not strong enough to fly.You just eat the breast meat.Usually done in a rook pie.
Flavour is abit strong all right, but otherwise has the consistancy of...chicken:rolleyes:

    All birds are protected!!
There are open seasons for certain species, game species such as ducks, grouse ,pheasants, etc, etc. These are listed on the open seasons order. And they are all closed on the 31st january and the ducks and grouse will open on the 1st of september and the next big one on the calender being the 1st of november for pheasants.

There is another list called a derogation this allows species that cause damage to be killed for specific reason and lists methods allowed. Pigeon can be killed provided they are damaging crops, beware that shooting over stubble is not considered protecting a crop, unless there is a crop nearby of course.
    Link to derogation below:
