Lars and the Real Girl

Why has this film not got a more general release? As far as I can see it's only on in 3 cinemas (including the IFI and Screen) in Dublin and no where else around the country. It's the best film I've seen in 2008 and the same goes for anyone I know that has seen seen it. I hadn't realised it hadn't got a wider release until those whom I'd recommended it to complained that it wasn't on.

If it's a decision by the film makers, so be it. If it's a issue with filling seats then it's a disgrace.

You'll be pleasantly surprised. Read the reviews in the review thread. Let us know what you think if you see it.

Did anybody else get a chance to catch this gem?

I went to see it not knowing much about the plot and was really amazed by it.

It was a gem and what I loved about the movie the most was the community outreach that just doesn'tt exist here anymore, how everybody did what they had to do to help Lars, and accepted Bianca, did all of that silly embarrassing stuff, all for his good.

    Also, the townsfolks reaction to
    Bianca's death
    was heartwarmingly hilarious.

It is a strange situation, as it is a very audience friendly film IMO. It is an uplifting comedy, and would certainly appeal to a lot of people.

Unfortunately, both distributors and cineplexes never seem to realise potential, and instead put on multiple screens and showings of Meet the Spartans and Step Up 2.

I just feel lucky to live near Dublin, so I can actually go to see these films in the one or two screens they are usually on in. It is people outside the city who are suffering the injustice here.

Was planning on watching it tonight, but now I'm going to have to go bash my head off a concrete pavement to try and forget.

My local has the same selection but they also got in There Will be Blood which I just saw so I can't complain. In relation to Meet the Spartans, there have been queues leading out the cinema and around the corner for it every evening. All screening bar two so far have been sold out, which has never happened before. Since opening over 4 years back no other film has ever sold out a screen.

Cineworld showed it over here in Glasgow, as did the Odeon and Showcase chains.

I loved it, the subject matter could easily have turned it into a sleaze fest, or even an out and out slushy piece of rubbish but they managed to keep it in line and it worked great.

Jesus you're right. I had a quick breeze through the cinema listings for all the major Irish cities and could only find a showing of Lars and the Real Girl on in the Kino in Cork as the only example of a non Dublin screening.

I really enjoyed the film. It was nice to see a sweet film in the cinema that wasn't trying to pawn you with trendy cynicism or 'too cool for school' characters and dialogue. A solid, heart warming film and it's times like this that make me happy I moved to Dublin.

    It really was 'sweet'.
It's the word that I think best describes it.

Oh...and apologies for the second thread matter.

Thought it was pretty stupid film myself. Underwhelmed.

Saw it over the weekend. Really enjoyed it.

Its really, really not the sort of film that will appeal to everyone though. You'll really either enjoy it or absolutely hate it.
