    The 40D ?

its a beauty ,, I only got my 400D last August, and i just got some lenses ..
but i feel drawn to this 40D .. I held one the other day and its such a nice
big solid camera .. if it were a woman it would be Penelope Cruz...

    or would i be better of getting a nice L lens .. the 24-70 f2.8 L looks nice ..

I changed my 400D two weeks ago to the 40D and theres a world of difference. Im looking at the two of them here in front of me and the 40D makes the 400D look and feel like a toy

My three year old godchild noticed I had changed my 400D to a 40D at her first glance of the camera!

She'll notice alright, you'll start coming home late at night and spending a lot of time with the camera and she'll get suspicious and figure it out!!

Your girlfriend's view is of no importance unless you have a mortgage together at this stage.

    However, this is the approach I took. I own a 40D. I also own a 350D.

Last summer I ran into technical glitches with the 350D. I needed improved picture quality at high ISOs. I particularly needed a larger cache in the camera and above all else I needed improved fps because I shoot a lot of sports. I also wanted weather proofing because the sports I shoot are of the wet variety.

The 40D costs around 1000E give or take kit lenses, source suppliers. What does it have that your 400D doesn't offer you at this point? If you cannot list off four items that you NEED (not WANT), then I'd scrap the 40D for the time being.

You don't say what lenses you do have but at this stage I would consider putting the money into glass - I dont' know how much you've to play with but you can get the much loved 70-200L for around the same, I think even f2.8. I'd also be looking at a 24-70L which is the one lens I covet at this point in time.

The 400D is a good camera. "the 40D feels like Penelope Cruz" is not a good enough reason to buy it.

My previous camera was an OM10. By the time I stopped using it, it was 22 years old. We need to lose this disposable culture for electronics stuff because it's not good for the environment. Frankly I'd look at upgrading the camera only if you can identify practical reasons why it's inadequate to your needs.

    My two cents.

I had some cash spare this month so I went through the glass or camera thing.
I decided I've not exceeded the capabilities of the 400D and finding it a little small in my hands wasn't sufficient reason to upgrade. So I went for my first L lens instead - I'm delighted I did. Of course now I want more.

    Do you need the 40D?
    Absolutely not!
The 400D is a brilliant camera!

Some of us here are obsessed with sport & have sold our souls. to buy the speed merchant. Does it make us better photographers? Of course it doesn't! It simply gives us more scope to engulf the game!

OK beyond the feel of thing I ran into several issues or limitations with the 400D to which I wanted improvements
    • High iso is not good
    • Some of the physical control layout irked me to the point I wanted a change
    • No weather sealing whatsoever - I hike a bit = rain = not good for 400D
    • Just wasnt rugged enough
    • Camera just wasnt physically large enough for my hands - I had the grip which improved things a lot but I also wanted a larger camera

The 40D has already proven to be:
    • much better at high iso - so necessary in dull weather ireland
    • has some degree of weather sealing (still wouldnt leave it out in a downpour but still some level)
    • controls are much better - also second settings screen is very nice to have
    • is a lot more rugged, more substational
    • fits my hands much better as is physically larger
    • does have a nice host of extra features - more custom functions, af on button is nice to have, live view is nice to have
    • added bonus - i wasnt expecting the slighty larger viewfinder to make such a difference but it does

im too sleepy this morning to think of more but these are the main things anyway

Is there much "really" that much difference between the 40D and the 400D? I thought it was really only fps and a few small changes that diffrenciated it from the 400D. I havent tried either so I dont really know...I do know someone selling an excellent 24-70L though :)

    Good post.
I have the 350D and was tempted by the 40D too after I used it. But I can't justify spending €1000 on something that will only a few times a year at best make the difference over the 350D I have. So I'm going to buy the battery grip for my 350D this summer, and make more use out of my 70-200L f2.8. The thing to remember is that the camera will be superseeded, good glass will always be good on the latest and greatest body!
The shutter speed and better high ISO handling would be very handy for me at rallies, but "handy" isn't worth a grand. I reckon I'll keep the 350D as my main camera and maybe when the 50D comes out I'll re-assess the situation!
On a side note, I thought the 400D and 40D had the same sensor?

I just after receiving my 40D from the courier, I ordered it online 48 hours ago and it arrived just there all the way from Hong Kong-Kea Photo. Cant believe how quickly this got to me! My last camera was a Nikon Coolpix 7900 so this is quite an upgrade, looking forward to using this new camera:)

It does indeed have the same basic sensor but the 40D has improvements that let it be used at much higher iso with much less noise creeping in

I think 400D has a Digic II processor while 40D is with Digic III, same with 450D.

The 40D is almost double the weight of the 450D too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,300 ✭✭✭PixelTrawler

its roughly 500g versus 750g - no more then the 400D plus grip

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,878 ✭✭✭whyulittle

Actually weighed all my stuff recently, 40D with battery grip comes in at 1.25kg.

i took the grip back off my 40D, its not really needed...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,878 ✭✭✭whyulittle

Yes with the two batteries loaded. Wouldn't get much of out if without them. ;)

Look, quit labouring the point. Get the plastic out and buy the bloody thing already! It's obvious from your post that your actually sold on it and your just looking for someone to tell you it's the right thing to do.

So, it's the right thing to do.

Tell the g/friend you've been feeding your 400D and it grew up to be a 40D;)

Go on...... ye know ye wanna!

Mine arrived today as well as an upgrade to my 350D and my god is it a beautiful piece of kit. Will be putting it through the paces over the next couple of weeks but initial impressions are that it is far superior to my old reliable which is now my secondary body :)

    i'd go with biro
invest in glass if you've got mullah!! this time next year it'll be something else!! thats marketing in the digital age!!
good lens will enhance any camera body you care to consider!

Does it though? Just curious, coz I had a Canon 300D & now with my 40D my macro lens is so much clearer and I'm able to see what I'm taking a whole lot better, the focus on it is better maybe?.... maybe my 300D wasn't working properly but I think the 40D body makes a big difference..... what's the technical thinking about that I wonder...

You've a larger viewfinder and the AF algorithims are improved on the 40D
