    Padded cycling shorts

Reposted from Bargain Alerts as no responses

You know the type you use when the saddle starts to hurt you! Had to pay €50 today in Dublin City Centre for a pair of lycra ones. Seems a total rip off and will need more so anyone know of anywhere online or in Ireland that sells for normal prices? I mean it's just a bit of padded lycra!

    Thanks

I don't know, €50 are cheap shorts in my book!

Siopa Rothar on John St. in Limerick were less than E30 there just a fortnight ago. Good Nalini pair too. E50 a bit much by comparison. (they were less than 30 actually as I bought something else as well and the total came to 30)

You'd still save paying postage from Limerick!

Good padded shorts cost about 150 euro never mind less than 50.

Wait until you get your first saddle sore, then see if 150 is a ripp off.........

Not all purchasers of shorts are triathlon dudes requiring extreme ass cosseting.

Strangely enough the triathlon aspect is grand, its the longer 4-6 hour rides that cause problems.

Rule of thumb: the more you ride, the more you invest in your ass.

Ahm... we're still talking just lycra shorts with some padding sewn in, right?

    E150???

I'm off to talk to the IDA.

If I were to buy a pair of no-name cycling shorts - or worse, lidl shorts (as I once did), I would use the money I saved to buy a nice soft ring shaped cushion and some savlon, lots and lots of deliciously soothing savlon.

That being said paying big money does not always assure quality either. Nalini were mentioned here, but our club Nalini shorts are the worst of the worst and only worn in one off races, never in stage races or training. That being said you can get top of the range Nalini's and some of their pro replica stuff is great...

Agreed. I bought a rake of Nalini replica stuff there a while back and almost on a whim put a pair of bibs and a pair of tights on the order. Was half expecting it to be on the crap side since it was cheap, but I was pleasantly surprised.

    Me again

I've been thinking of this shorts issue some and thought about a more comfortable saddle. Anyone ( not you triathalon types ) who cycles no more than 20km a day used gel saddle covers instead of padded bum things. I see Specialized do them too.

Could it repace a pair of padded undershorts? ( Did I mention the shorts were for under 3/4 length baggy shorts.)

I ride a Selle Italia SLR, which is much the same as sitting on a plank of wood. Regarding the saddle covers, its the friction that does the damage on longer rides and I imagine that the saddle cover would not be as secure and would ultimately damage you in the long run. I hear very good things about the Fizik saddles in terms of comfort. Lots of pro riders prefer them despite the enhanced weight. One of the lads I train with has been a pro for many years and no matter which team he has been in his Fizik saddle has followed him around.

our club stuff is made by nalini also, the shammy is paper thin.

There is a definate difference between the bottom end/Lidl/Aldi/Altura stuff (which I have, and is grand for commuting etc.) and halfway decent entry-level stuff (which is actually no more expensive). I think you will often get better value online in the sales than even from Lidl/Aldi (cost slightly more, but will be better.)

I did the Wicklow 200 on a €20 pair of Manitou shorts from CRC and have done 1,000km cycles (80k/day) on a generally similar combo (changed daily but recycled without washing 500km in ;-)

I have _never_ had a saddle sore. Never. Other issues unrelated to clothing (including debilitating lower back pain RIGHT NOW) and worn through shorts but never a saddle sore. And I don't wash my shorts every day either.

Ha, sorry, neglected to mention that I _do_ wear underwear when wearing shorts over more than one day. Contrary to popular belief this does not necessarily cause chafing or your nether regions to break out in sores and boils (although sans-underwear is undoubtedly much more comfortable, indeed necessary, over longer distances.)

Went into a bike shop in Belgium last year to buy a pair of cycling shorts, asked for a basic pair - they cost €75, was initially shocked as I was relatively new to cycling but it was short lived when I discovered the difference. Up to this point I was using a pair of €25 Nalini. My nightmare now would be to have to do a long ride with the Nalini - it is down to the quality of the padding in the shorts, you get what you pay for.
