    Hi,

3 out of 4 of us are club members.

We have booked an Friday "open day" and am wondering what to do regarding the individual who is not a member of any club.

Do the golf clubs cross check their computer systems to ensure that people are actually members elsewhere??
Or is it all done on trust?

Might be asked to produce their GUI card when signing in

I would say you'll be fine but definitely will not be able to compete in the comp. So put down 18 or whatever as you sign in the book but regardless of what you shoot, don't hand in a card.

Technically, you shouldn't be playing, but if you're making up a 4ball with mates and not affecting the comp then it's not a huge problem in my view. It goes on a lot in open days.

That said, it is likely you will be asked to produce a GUI card and swipe in. If you say you've forgotten it you may be asked to ring your club for your number...

It's likely you'll be asked to swipe but that doesn't say you have to do it.

Just simply don't hand a card in or sign anyone elses.

Did this with 2 mates. Myself and one other guy had our GUI cards but the third didn't. I just popped into the clubhouse and said the third guy was running late - I'm paying for him. He'll swipe his card when he arrives.... We headed on no hassle - thought I was a right cute h*re....

Just as we're on the tee box a guy arrives and says he's just put his name down as a fourth in the group for the comp.... If it was a normal green fee day we could have said no, we have a match between ourselves or we're in a rush or something but as it was an open comp we had to let him - not that we minded....

I'm walking down the fairway with the new guy chatting (towards the left rough of course) and it turns out he's the bloody club captain. I was sh*tting a brick for the whole round that he'd cop I pulled a fast one. Our non-GUI mate is an okay golfer, but doesn't play comps and there's no money on the games so we never worry about the small rules with him, he's just there for a bit of craic and to unwinde after a hard week in work. The captain pulled him up on grounding the club in the bunker, walking across a line and a few other little things. Worst round of golf of my life... Just shows - karma!!!

Completely depends on the club - based on my experience some are strict on looking for GUI cards - others couldn't give a damn - will ask for a club name and handicap. Nice tactic on the running late fib.

Personally I see no problem in it as long as the non members are of a reasonable standard. The one thing that will draw attention is if there is a a coupel of "hackers" in an open.

    I am the OP.

We played yesterday in Carton House (escaped the rain too!).

No great hassle with the non member.

The course is full of bunkers and not especially scenic.

I presume with the bunkers comment that you're talking about the Monty course. It's not meant to be scenic - it's a beast of a course. If you're looking for a decent challenge it's a good one.

Yeah, it was the Monty course.

It was a "decent challenge" which did not greatly suit my relatively poor level of golf!

What was the rough like? Played it a couple of months ago and it was all cut down - was spraying it a bit left/right and was finding the ball (and good lies). There were even a couple of holes where it seemed to pay not to follow the line of the fairway i.e. on those doglegs/ slight doglegs it made the hole shorther and took some bunkers out of play.

Just playing a friendly round - no problem with non GUI member - playing in an "open" is different ALL players should be GUI members and have current club handicaps,
