    Hello all,

I am looking to create a backup/image of my Laptop HDD. I want to upgrade the HDD, and as I received no OS CD's, (my HDD is partitioned), I am looking to create a backup so I can just insert the DVD/CD backup and install everything onto my new HDD, OS, files the lot. I have Nero 7 backItup..Just wondering has anyone had any experience with this S/W and more importantly will it do the job..

    thnaks for you inputs....

    Hi,
What Operating System are you running.

If you have Win XP pro, check under system tools, for the backup wizard, very handy tool if you have it, have used it before and its the simplest way of backing up and restoring everything.

I am using Vista HP. Assuming Visat has a similar tool. But will enable me to install a new HDD and have the same image. E.G Not have to reinstall all my programs and OS?

Norton Ghost will work, costs roughly €50.
Other than that you need to back up system state, ALL files and folders, then restore it all to new drive, probably need the OS CD to repair the OS after restore, then restore the system state. It's a bit messey, but can work.
With Ghost though you can just add your new hard disk to the PC, boot to the ghost CD and clone one straight to the other without having to use any other media.

So I am aware Norton Ghost does this, but has anyone used the Nero BackItUp 2.10.....Does the Nero do the same as Norton Ghost

I've been trying out a few backup solutions, and have come across clonezilla. It's linux based, but doesn't require any linux knowledge. You boot from the cd you create with the clonezilla image on it. Only thing so far is only been able to store image on external usb drive. Easy to use though. And fast.

    I don't think so.

If you recieved no CD/DVDs and your drive is partioned, you'll find your OS and apps are on that extra partition. I have HP's here in the job and they came with everything you need to make the back up discs. Just run the recovery program or whatever from the start menu. Then you just need to make backup (windows one will do..) and then just load everything after you upgrade.

Hi..It seems I can only make one copy of the HP/Compaq recovery discs. I was told by a Compaq Tech Support Rep. that I cannot use the recovery discs to recover a new HDD. I.E. I have a 80Gb HDD but I cannot use the discs to re-install Visa plus drivers on a new 200Gb HDD.

"Dave_Eyesclosed" you mentioned need to make a backup (windows one will do..). Is this an image/backup SW. Can I use the recovery partitioned drive to somehow create a bootable iso?

If I d/l a trial of Acronis are all the features available. Guessing I would have to image and re-install same day to ensure the trial doesn't expire

If you partition 80 GBs of the new drive off, you should be able to restore to it. I could be wrong though..

The windows back up is a folder by folder back up. Not images.

Can't speak for that version of Acronis, but I use the server imaging one in work and it's amazing! Although, I had to buy an add on for restoring to different hardware so be sure the trial does that before you commit to the installation / imaging.

I can't see why you couldn't use your hp disks to install the OS on a new HDD. HP don't make drives so they installed on a blank HDD at some stage.

If that doesn't work for some reason that clonezilla sw I mentioned earlier can be used to copy your 80 gb drive onto a larger drive. Once that's done you can use gparted from an ubuntu live cd to resize the partition to the full 200 gb. At least that's what the FAQ on the site for it says.

But the problem with that is..... Clonezilla is for UNIX and I'm using Vista HP???

Nope I'm wrong apologies...It can be used with MS

I needed to get a backup solution a while ago for a lad, so after a bit of research I plumped for the "R-drive image" software. very good I have to say, and very simple to use, even for non techies. will boot from the usb drive and restore the image from there. cheap enough too..

I've been using this "Mozy" programe for a while https://mozy.com/ with their free trial up to 2 gb and I am thinking of going unlimited for $4.95 per month.

    Any one else use this?

Actually Clonezilla is OS independant its a Live CD so it should run on any computer that can boot from CD also the Gparted Clonezilla is an excellent edition to any techies toolkit with a Knoppix or UBC4WIN disc for data recovery
