PS1 Games Work On 40GB PS3?

Hi. i heard you can play ps1 games on a 40gb ps3 is it true, still cant use ps2 games tho , anyway let me know plz, as i got a JAP ps3 and i wana buy metal gear solid 1, to clear it AGAIN! LOL

They will play but are region locked.

I'm almost certain that it will play PS1 games, but I also think that if your console is Japanese you'll have to get the Japanese MGS1, the PS3 is not region free for PS1/PS2 games.

Of course if there's something on the Playstation Store it should work.

thanks guys , seriously thanks, i've just ordered a japanese MGS 1 From japan, its NTSC J And is in english or japanese so im all good, this is all i wana play from ps1 anyway lol, thank youuu

Yep, Ive played a couple of old ps1 games on my 40gb. Mainly to see if it worked. Ridge racer hasnt aged well im afraid.

Technically not all PS2 games will work on certain PS2 models

On the original 60GB models, nearly all do. On the ones with software emulation, fewer but still most will work. On the 40GB model there is no PS2 support.

Also, PSone discs are region locked, but PSone downloads from the PSN store are region free I think.

I read this thread last Friday and thank god i did.
Whilst browsing round a video shop i found a copy of twisted metal 2 (PS1) for 10$(6Euro), bought it, threw it in the PS3 and it worked.
So to answer your question yes, PS1 games do work on PS3 40gig.
