I got my ipod back from apple yesterday after trying to get it fixed, they couldn't fix it so they gave me a new one. It's a 30gb video one.

For some reason it won't let me drag and drop songs (or podcasts) from my itunes library to my ipod. So to put songs onto it I synced it with my itunes library, but then I couldn't play the songs on my ipod through itunes. If I viewed my ippod songs in itunes all the song names or in grey instead of black. I can't select them or put them into a playlist or anything like that.

Same for the podcasts, the list is just in grey. If I click the little arrow to the left of the podcast name the podcasts on my ipod drops down but I can't select any of them.

Any ideas what the problem could be?

It's confusing what you say there - one can play songs on an iPod or play songs on a PC/Mac using iTunes but one doesn't play songs on an iPod in iTunes....

However, if everything inside iTunes is grey then it sounds as though the location of your music library, which would be on the PC somewhere, has either moved or iTunes thinks it has moved. Using iTunes, open the preferences from the menu and check where it states your music library is located - is it the right location? Alternatively, can you navigate to where you store your music on the PC and double click one of the songs there and see if it opens and plays in iTunes? Does it give you apparently two copies of the same song in iTunes (order by song to see)?

My music library in itunes is in black and I can play songs in it.

But when I view the songs that are on my ipod in itunes, they are in grey. And I can't select them.

Itunes also won't let me drag and drop songs from my library to my ipod.

Connect your iPod to the PC, open iTunes and click on your iPod icon once to bring up it's "homepage" in iTunes. In the summary tab, check the box that says "manually manage music and videos".
