Working in a betting shop

I have a bit of a dream of opening my own betting shop at some stage but would obviously have to get experience before doing so. It would be a big carreer change for me and most likely a big drop in earnings. I have a fairly in-depth knowledge of betting and an equally in-depth knowledge on most sports. I'd like to get views from anyone who works or has worked in a betting office, specifically in supervisor/asst manager/manager roles on their experiences - both good and bad. Also what type of salaries are paid for the various roles in this industry?

I worked for one of the big betting companies. After being there a month and witnessing how immoral they were, I quit.

Their unoffical policy of avoiding conversations with problem gamblers (in case they mention their problem) I found particularly horrible. Also, they close the accounts of winners. They only wanted losers on their books.

Something you learn pretty quick about working for a bookies is 99.99% of punters are down money. It's a horrible industry and I would advise against getting involved in it.

Saying all that, they were a nice company to work for.

You thought many people made money gambling? Gambling is fun but the bookie always wins etc. I don't view it as immoral though, no more than a shop selling drink to someone with a problem. The way the incentives are you can't expect people not to sell them drink or take another bet from them.
