I'm looking to get fit as I want to apply for the British Army and I was wondering about joining a rugby club. I don't know the rules of Rugby, I just happen to watch it when it's on Sentanta. I do have an interest in Rugby. I really would like to join a club both for social and fitness levels. Can some one help me? I live in White Hall Area.

    read the stickies!

but probably nearest club to you is Unidare RFC, Clontarf FC close enough too.

season is finished for all intents and purposes now though - maybe Rugby League?

North Dublin Eagles play in St.Pauls Raheny, check out the rugby league forum

The Rugby Union season is over, but you are more than welcome to train with us down at the Eagles. If you visit www.NorthDublinEagles.com you'll find a link for new players. Drop a mail in there and someone will get back to you. We have a lot of lads from union clubs nearby too so you'll be able to make contacts if you want to play Rugby Union in the close season :)

Good for you. I gave up playing and took up reffing. from my experience of reffinf various clubs, most clubs would be very welcoming of new players. You'd be better off going for a smaller club as they would be more welcoming to players who had never played before. Some big clubs have some clicks that go right back to school days etc.

    Clontarf good club, reffed them.
Unidare, haven't reffed them but are a smaller club and I would imagine be very welcoming. They train in DCU.

    Hi folks,

I will be moving to Dublin in a couple of weeks, and was wondering if someone could recommend a good junior club team for me on the southside? I'm sure there are loads, but I don't mind travelling a few miles for the right setup.

I'm in my mid twenties and would appreciate somewhere where there is good banter as well as a proper setup. I've played one year of U18 before, winning a provincial title in the process, but was and still am a Gaelic Football player. Have been out of action for a year and looking to get back to fitness.

    Any suggestions appreciated!

How did you even find this thread...three years old.

If you stick a search in old threads will show up. For repeat topics its often better to recycle old ones rather than start new ones.

What part of South Dublin are you moving to?

Haven't fixed on a location yet, but I am looking somewhere in between Harold's Cross - Terenure - maybe Ranelagh.

However, as mentioned, I've no problem jumping in the car for a few miles to a particular club if its worth it either.

Could do worse than Stillorgan then. Small, junior club with decent enough set up. They play in Clonskeagh, pretty much walking distance from Ranelagh.

You could head down to Bective in Donnybrook either, very close to Ranelagh and on all the main bus lines. They've got three or four junior teams and they all train in Donnybrook unlike the 1st XV who train up by Stepaside, good club with a great social side and very welcoming.

Also you have CYM located in the heart of Terenure. We have U20's, J4 and J2 teams. Accessible via 15 buses, 65 buses and 16a and 49 bus. Training every Tuesday and Thursday at 7pm.

    To continue with the options...

UCD (my club - have to give them a plug ;)) are always looking for new players. We have 1st (AIL div 1(b)), J1, 2 and 4 teams that have won/competed well in their leagues over the last few seasons. Great facilities, gonna sound biased but they are amongst some of the best in Ireland at club level, hence Leinster moving in full time onto campus. Very welcoming to new players. Good craic after matches. J2/4 training is every Monday and Wednesday at 7.

St. Mary's are a good club in the area, have teams in every league. Wanderers as well are good, they have J1, 2, (not sure about 3), 4 and 5 teams.

Would recommend any of the suggestions before as well. tbh, I'd say you'll fit in and enjoy yourself with any of the clubs mentioned in this thread.

Cheers everyone - loads of options by the looks of things.

Looks like its much easier to play a bit of social rugby in Dublin. With the metro leagues there isn't much travel involved if any. At home you'd be driving good distances to get games.

One more thing - how many games would an average team get in their season? Just looking at fixture lists - there are games on pretty much every week until November - I presume there is another phase in the New Year?

At J4 level, you'll probably have 5 games before christmas, a break over the christmas period, and 8 after christmas. That's for section A and B teams anyway. For section C teams it'll be different as it doesn't have the phase 1 & 2 system, its just a straight forward league so you'll play everyone home and away.

Then there is the cup at the end of the season to add onto that.

One more option close to were you are planning to live would be De La Salle Palmerston / SALMO. The pitches are located in Stepaside. The club premises and equipment are amazing and the lads are really friendly people.
There are J1, J2, J3, J4 and J5 teams so there is a place for every levels.

You (or whoever that could be interested) just have to go any Tuesday/Thursday to the pitches around 7.15pm, ask for the junior group and talk with the coaches/join the group.

    Enjoy your time in Dublin!

J4 theres another phase of fixtures. J5 has all the fixtures down. j5 for example is 14 game season. not including a cup, which at J5 level would be 4 games to win the cup , So a possible 18 games. While if you play at J4 level you'll see a few more games than that .

    Goodluck !
