Dell XPS won't pick up modem

I just bought a Dell XPS M1710 an it won't pick up the modem I've been using on an older Dell (Latitude D610). XPS is running XP not Vista (as was the Latitude).
Any ideas or help greatly appreciated.

What do you mean by "modem" are we talking 56k dialup modem that you fitted internally to the new M1710 (that would have had one anyways), Wireless modem? Bluetooth Modem? Devils in the Details.

Mobile broadband modem from "3". Sim card in a box sort of thing

Aah okay dokey. Does it show up in device manager when you plug it in via USB? Right Click My Computer->Select Manage->in Computer Management select -> Device Manager, is it listed under Modems, or is there anything with a yellow exclamation mark beside it?

Does the modem software appear as a CD drive in Explorer/My Computer. If so, just kick off the install from there.

First off, I'm assuming that your modem is a Huawei E220(same as used by Vodafone and O2).

I'd try rebooting the PC and connecting to a different USB port. Don't know if it's of any signifigance, but many Latitudes had problems with USB modems and mice if they weren't attached to the rear USB ports(gave me the impression that the side ports carried less power).

I'd also check to make sure that the CD drive showing up is the E220 drive and not another drive from your laptop. Check in Disk Management in Control Panel if unsure, just to make sure your laptop hasn't mapped two drives to the same place(this happens a lot on networked PCs).
