Treating timber for outdoors

    Hello

I inherited a patio heater from the previous owner of my house. I dismantled it recently and dumped the top section but I had an idea to use the base cabinet piece. I want to put a tabletop on it. I have my eye on a section of 40mm oak staved kitchen worktop. What should I treat it with to make it weatherproof.

It will eventually be covered when not in use, so it needs to be made weather resistant to light showers and such. Was thinking of oiling it with teak oil - several coats built up over days - both sides and the edges. That should create a lacquer effect and is easily maintained.

    Any other suggestions ?
