Had been training well for Connemara but managed to pick up a small injury a few days beore hand. Very minor but enough to mess up the big day. So here I am now, lots of training done but no marathon! Seeing as the fitness is there, I'd like to get one in and was looking at others in Ireland - Cork doesn't suit (bad weekend) but I see that the Clare Burren Marathon is on May 24th. Anybody know anything about it? What's the course like? The website isn't overflowing with detail...

I don't know anything about it but I am going to do the half marathon to pace someone around to a PB (and she had better do it, I don't take prisioners!). Someone else was worried about it being primarily a walking marathon and e-mailed the organisers who said it was fine to run it. I'm sure if you email them with any questions you have they will answer.

Alternatives include Belfast and Newry for summer marathons?

Hi HM, good to hear you'll be back in action, even if it's 'only' a half ;)

Will have a look at Belfast too, Newry is out - May 26th, Bank holiday in the North, not here! I'll have ago at emailing the Burren people.

I thought about Newry but didn't fancy the Monday. So opted for Edinburgh that Sunday - cheap flights and a very flat/fast course. Entries are still open as well...

I had the opposite experience and mailed them to see if you could run it, and they responded that 'no, it cannot be run because much of it is off-road across rocks etc'. Sounds perfect for an IMRA race. :)

    Howdy,

It can be run, in fairness, anywhere you walk can be run!

The course however is very tough. I didn't do it last year but I regularly mountain bike the route and even that is tough. I have done Connemara, and this course is waaaaayyyyyyy harder.

That said, it would be a pretty cool experience and its cheap on the old pocket. They did however have some problems with signage on the course last year and competitors in both the half and full ended up going off course. Hopefully they'll have that sorted for this year.

Its a goal of mine to run the toughest 15 miles of the course some weekend.

    Ray.
