I'm going to maintain this for the season ahead throwing all athletes together. Its basic enough, the score based on an athletes best performance as a % of the 10th best performance in the world. To start, I'm using last season 10th best performances but will change once the season is in full swing and this season's performances are up to speed. There should be 100 or so athletes who will get ranked.

    Scoring outlined below:
    • The World's 10th Best Performance in each event is used as the benchmark
    • All athletes within 7.5% of this benchmark will be given a rank
    • Scoring calculation is (Athletes Best Performance / Benchmark)

Here are the "qualification standards" for getting a ranking.

Great idea, Tingle. I've stuck it, so hopefully it'll get more visits.

    So, who'll be top dog?

    McGettigan, O'Keeffe, O'Rourke, or a walker?

On the male side, Hession, Gillick or Heff?

Good luck with the thread and the attendant work! :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

Early days but Olive Loughnane is top with her 1:30:51 but I'd say O' Keeffe will top while Heffernan, Cragg, or Hession on the men.

I'll update the ranked athletes tonight when home, there are 11 so far.

    First rankings are added

cant wait to see hession run the 100 in the olympics....love to see him get close to ten or even break it( before any trolls get going i know his irish record is 10.18 and i know to knock .18 seconds of that will be a monsterous if not impossible task).. once he gets going against the sub 10 second guys i think he will do well

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

Joanne Cuddihy's 23.56 in the 200 moves her into 4th on the rankings.

Mark Carroll is a legend. Aged 36 he ran 13:28 in the Mt Sac relays and moves up to 2nd in the rankings. He should go faster too as the season progresses.

Well, well, well. We may have a 4 x 400 womens team in Beijing after all. Karen Shinkins has popped out a 53.89 in a meet in California, apparently off only 3 weeks proper training. Into 12th in the rankings.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

Updated for Carey, Gillick and Shinkins. Carey into 3rd, Gillick 6th.

Most of the big guns have opened with the Hesh, Cragg and DOR still to test the waters.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

No change at the top its still

    1 - Olive Lougnane 20k W
    2 - Mark Carroll 5000
    3 - Michelle Carey 400H
    4 - Dave Campbell 1500
    5 - Dave Campbell 800

But Michael Dyer is ranked (13th) with his 1:51.97 (800) and Andrew Ledwith (15th) too with his 14:01.11 (5000).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

Thought we might have had some changes but the Cragg/Carroll no show in Palo Alto scuppered that. Andrew Ledwith's 10000 run gets in while Pamela Hughes is on the verge of a ranking and the first Junior to do so with her suberb world junior qualifying 1.80 jump in the BUSA's (1.82 will get her in to the rankings).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

18 year old Niamh Whelan's 11.80 in Cork last week brings her into 13th on the rankings (out of 18) and No 1 Junior.

Will update a full listing after the weekends action.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

Rob Heffernan has gone to the top with his brilliant performance in Russia and it will take some beating. Olive Loughnane has improved her score but its not enough to stay No.1

I've also included a Junior rankings for any junior who gets within 10% of the basemark. Not surprisingly, Niamh Whelan is top Junior at the moment.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

    Some mid-table additions:

Tom Chamney into 8th, Colin Griffin into 13th and Brian Murphy into 16th.

    21 athletes now ranked.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

Ciara Everard's run on wednesday in irishtown (2:08.15 - World Junior Standard) has brought her into 22nd on the overall rankings and she is now 2nd Junior behind Niamh Whelan. KCH are leading the charge at the moment with 3 athletes ranked

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

Lots of athletes added over the weekend. Brian Gregan is now Junior No.1, with Barry Pender also added. Waiting on the wind reading from schools before Chris Russell and Michael Hynes can be added.

Loads of seniors too, David McCarthy & Joe Warne (800), Colm Rooney, Deirdre Byrne, Kerry Harty & Maria McCambridge (1500).

Will post full list tomorrow after all weekend results are in.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

29 athletes now ranked and 11 junior in the junior rankings.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

Joanne Cuddihy is into 4th with her 51.98 and Deirdre Ryan into 11th with her 1.88.

Tingle, thanks for your continuing work on this.

As a bit of a statto, are you aware if there is (or has been in the past) any Irish equivalent to Power of 10/Athletics Data whereby athletes are ranked by event and age on an ongoing basis? (And no I'm not volunteering :))

No as far as I am aware. There are no official underage rankings despite attempts down through the years to do so. Would be a good initiative and add something to the top kids in each age group. The current rankings are provided by a Finnish guy (I think) as I'm sure you know and he also supplies most of the world rankings to IAAF and other nations etc but he obviously doesn't do underage stuff to deep levels as it would be a massive task for him to do globally.

Thanks Tingle. So the Irish senior rankings are produced by a Finnish guy  or maybe I've got the wrong end of the stick?

Out of interest the UK, as you know, have competing ranking services. Power of 10 is sponsored by UK Athletics and Athletics Data (the superior product) is done on a volunteer basis. I'm just wondering why, with a considerably smaller volume of competition in Ireland, AAI or somebody can't produce something similar. If the will isn't there then it's rather sad.

On a totally seperate note I'm surprised and pleased to see a Doheny in your rankings. I thought Dunmanway only produced Gaelic players and road bowlers!

Great day at the schools in Tullamore has added 10 new rankings to the Juniors. Most notable is Curtis Woods with a pretty impressive 200/400 double. One to watch!

    Juniors only is added below.

Meanwhile Paul McKee did 47.04 (16th) yesterday and Deirdre Byrne a 2:06 (23rd) 800 on the senior rankings (which will be updated when the many meets of the weekend are completed).

Yes, this guy http://www.tilastopaja.org/ which is a legendary site, used by EAA and maybe the IAAF, not sure. He updates all meets, goes pretty deep to 500 or 1000 in the world. Well worth the subscription fee of €90 for two years. Membership gives you unlimited access to pratically all meets in the world, an example the results from the 1st round of the ESB League are there along side the Golden League!!

    Gillick into 3rd with 45.65
    McCarthy into 10th with 1:48.65
    Britton into 11th
    Hazel Murphy into 17th

7 other additions or improvements. More tomorrow!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

Lots of additions with 47 athletes now ranked. Slight change on the score as I was using the wrong basis in my formula. Doesn't change any positions, just each athletes score very slighly a couple of basis points.

Gillick is into 3rd, Cragg into 4th. Dave McCarthy into 11th with a handy 1:48. Hazel Murphy 18th with a good 4:15. A few U23 added with Linda Byrne (26th), Kevin Moriarty (36th), Amy Foster (42nd) and Kelly Proper (44th) with her 200 and not her long jump.

DSD is the top club at the moment with 5 athletes while 800 has 11 athletes, the 1500 10 and the 400 9 athletes.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

    3 more additions.

    Hession into 3rd (20.48), O' Rourke into 5th (12.99) and Nolan into 25th (3:44.48).

Also, Chamney moves ahead in the 800 battle with his 1:48.30 (11th) and McKee makes ground into 14th (46.63).

    Top 5
    1 - Heffernan
    2 - Lougnane
    3 - Hession
    4 - Gillick
    5 - O' Rourke

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

    More additions:

    Gordon Kennedy 46.81 (21st)
    Liam Reale 1:50.55 (30th)
    Eoin Everard 1:51.20 (37th)
    Brian Doyle 21.48 (46th)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

Rosin McGettian moves into the 7th with her Europa run while 18 year old Brian Gregan moves into the senior Top 20.

Niamh Whelan and Gregan dominating the Junior Rankings but the Ciaras in the 800 & 1500 have moved into the top 5. The 7 track events up to 1500 are covered by the juniors, brillant stuff.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

Chamney moves from 15th to 8th with his Spanish 800m run of 1:47.33.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71 ✭✭Redgraffle

Great to see Chamney run a good time after some indifferent performances... Only another 1.3 sces to go !!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

Roisin makes a serious move from 8th to 3rd with her Greek steeplechase.

Chamney would have passed her but stays in 9th despite his SB jump while Campbell moves to 12th with his SB.

Any 800m guys who make the final willing to pace the final next sunday in Santry, could be their last hope!!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

Eileen O' Keeffe up to 5th with her 72.75. Deirdre Byrne ranked 11th and still not going to Beijing, relative to her global peers she probably deserves it and its only because of the depth in the event that she isnt.

Darragh Graham (Sli Chulann) ranked 58th with his 100m of 10.70, Kelly McNiece (Lisburn) in 65th with 1500 of 4:19.56.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 452 ✭✭Domer

I think you need to updated your data with the world leading time in most of the events. The % figure is based on early season performances.

    100 - 9.72
    200 - 19.67
    400 - 43.86
    800 - 1:42.69
    1500 - 3:31.57
    5000 - 12:50.55
    etc...

Kelly McNiece the big mover with her 1500 (19th) and 800 (23rd).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

I've added more depth to the rankings and its everyone within 10% of the standards. So its pretty deep at 179 rankings. There are also rankings per age group and per event category. Also a breakdown of clubs in these categories. The joys of excel.

    Overall athlete - Rob Heffernan
    U23 - Eoin Everard
    Junior - Brian Gregan
    Sprinter - David Gillick
    Middle Dist - Roisin McGettigan
    Long Dist - Alistair Cragg
    Hurdles - Derval O' Rourke
    Jumps - Deirdre Ryan
    Throws - Eileen O' Keeffe
    Walk - Rob Heffernan

If anyone notices errors re Clubs, Ages etc let me know. This is all setup now so should be easy to maintain next season as well.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,567 ✭✭✭RoyMcC

    Excellent work Tingle, thanks.

Two things that jump out from the further analysis

    1. Thank goodness for Ireland's comparative strength in running - over all distances. Field is almost dead in the water (with honourable exceptions).

    2. 56 clubs are represented. Is there a case for consolidation into larger training units  e.g. centres of excellence so that standards in the 'weaker' events could be ramped up?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

Roisin McGettigan moves into 2nd ahead of Olive Loughnane.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭thirtyfoot

Olive Loughnane is our top athlete at this stage and it looks like unless there is a super performance in the next few weeks the Galway woman will stay there. Heffernan 2nd, McGettigan 3rd.

New Irish Youth Record by Curtis Woods with a 48.07, great running and hopefully he'll push on further next season.
