    Hey,

Just wondering, there's a guy up the road from my parents who has broadband from eircom (1mb I believe) yet the line we have is unsuitable for broadband. This guy won't tell me his line attenuation stats for whatever reason so I thought I'd ask here - do you guys know the upper limit for 1meg or 512k? Can I buy the 1mb package even if I only sync at 512 (because it's better than 56k)?

If your line is failing the line check, then there's not a lot you can do. eircom won't investigate or do anything about this. Not sure if the line stats are the only thing that would determine it, and besides which, there's no way for you to check yours to compare with your neighbours.

Unless your line is capable of sustaining 1Mbps, eircom won't offer anything. They removed the 512k option years ago.

This is linked in the FAQ sticky (http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055167684), but it's not very clearly posted - it doesn't mention the word "attenuation" for starters.

I *think* it's either 96dB or 100dB or thereabouts. You'd have to do a lot of digging and letter writing to eircom or else getting someone you know in eircom to get that confirmed.

Many modem stats mean nothing as they can only measure up to 63.5dB as according to the ADSL specs. I'm not sure if that applies to all ADSL modems.

Also, I believe eircom install repeaters on very long lines, which means that the attenuation reading is only from where the repeater is installed. Possibly from where the roadside cabinet is located.
