Is it ok to insert/remove battery while plugged in?

My laptop is plugged in 99% of the time, and since I understand that heat reduces a battery's lifespan, the battery is almost always removed. However there are times when I need to go mobile. What I need to know is can I just stick in in the battery while the machine is plugged in and powered up, or do I have to shut down and then insert the battery?

Should be fine, I've never experienced or heard of any stories to the contrary. We do it fairly often here at work testing machines, resitting batteries etc and never seems to be an issue.

I do it all the time and never had a problem.
