I have a dell optiplex in the office here it was working fine yesterday (just had to correct the time adn date in bios every few weeks). This morning I got a no boot device available message.

i have tried swapping the hds with another pc and both work fine in each machine. I also tried swapping power cables and the ide cables with no luck. I went into bios and noticed that the primary drive 0 and 1 and secondary drive 0 and 1 are both set to unknown device.

I changed primary drive 0 to auto for the hd and secondary drive 0 to auto to try and pick up the hd and cd but i still get 'Primary hard disk drive 0 not found' and 'Secondary hard disk drive 0 not found'.

    Any ideas.

Nevermind go it sorted. BIOS went mad and decided to turn a load of settings off in integrated devices. maybe its corrput.

If you need to regularly reset date and time in BIOS then its likely that the CMOS Battery on the Motherboard is knackered. This would also explain other BIOS settings being lost.
Most boards use a CR2032 button cell - easily replaced and readily available in electronics, photo, computer shops.
