    Hey,

Just polling peoples opinions on the new album. I heard most of the new album material live in radio recordings and thought it was going to be basically more of the same (which I would have had no problem with :) )

However after reading some interviews (e.g Rollingstone)
about what was going on in Adams life during the last few years, I see the songs in a totally different light.

The more I listen to it, the more I think it might be there best since August & Everything After.

The free e.p. they had up on the website was awful... the first track being essentially a b-side from what, 10 years ago? I gave the lead single a spin, on youtube, but couldn't get into that either. Shame, really. I used to be a pretty big fan!

The first track on that ep (and the album) is 1492, gotta say I love the guitar solo, real throw back to the heavier rock sound in Recovering the Satellites.

Trust me if you ever liked Counting Crows, you'll like this album :)

On balance, I think it's probably their best album since Recovering the Satellites. Because of the concept, it's a little overlong, but there's some very good stuff in there.

That's because 1492 was written back then!

True it was originally written a long time ago, but I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing. According to a few interviews I've read, Adam repeatedly listening to that song inspired the Saturday Nights half of the record.

Nothing wrong with reworking old songs, Dylan reworked songs from his Oh Mercy sessions when recording Love and Theft and U2 have often returned to older songs which didn't make earlier albums, as famously, did Johnny Cash.

I've herad some of this album and it seems ok, bit of a return to the sound of their first two albums.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with reworking old songs, but I think there's a reason this one was rejected for previous albums... namely it's not any good!

I see they put Washington Square on it too, have a live version of that floating about here somewhere.

Is is just me or is this the first album to make irish references??

Washington Square and On a Tuesday in Amsterdam long ago both have references......I dont remember him using references like that before..

I think its genius, was anxious playing it first time, as I always am with a new CC album, But I really love it...interesting to read Adam's thankyous at the back..seems they had some resistance to the album

The irish press have slated it....for being morose and full of angst...what the hell did they expect from a CC album :p

It's an odd one, the Irish (and indeed British) press always slate Counting Crows, but they'll always sell out shows when they play here.

But then again, they're not the latest skinny-jeaned indie flavour of the month, so I guess that's it :p

Yep your right :), Adam used to mention "Dublin,Ireland" during live performances of Murder Of One but these are the 1st studio references.

(Also went asked for his favourite places to visit, he said Ireland & Italy)

Listening to this loads of times when it first came out and it quickly grew old. After a long break from it, I think I can finally give a proper opinion on it. 'Cowboys' is among one of their top 20 best songs, but apart from that nothing comes close. The second half is much better than the first, and if this had have been a double album, I don't think I would have played the first disc. Hopefully the songs will sound better when they play them when they're over here this month.
