iv seen that the prices up the north are cheaper than those even on some southern internet sites but i only use basic ntl pipe into my house and have been informed that due to northern tv's not having vhf the tv would be useless, is there anyway of rectifying this without spending too much

Use a VCR for VHF channels. Not ideal, but it's an option.

Not all brands of TV's will have UHF-only tuners. Though Panasonic for one do have varying tuners between UK and Ireland, and maybe Toshiba too?
