I don't know when, but I've read some very bad reviews about certain equestrian equipment from Lidl. Not much help, I know!

yeah, I wouldn't buy anything from there were quality is important lol, i.e. riding hats.

Ah but it was handy for getting cheapy headcollars, saves spending 15euro on one only for it to get stolen by someone in a yard or having it ruined by a pony kept outdoors!

yeah thats the sort of stuff I'm looking for lol. I got a nice snaffle bit & some polo wraps there the last time. I bought a huge bottle of fly spray as well but the top got broken somehow and it all leaked out :(

With regards to the riding hats the Lidl & aldi riding hats are the same european standard EN 1384 as some of the GPA & gpa style hats that are on the market now. that you pay hundreds more for

with regards to some of the equipment there i never compromise when it comes to my horses but some of the stuff is very good quality the travelling boots are brilliant and im into my 3rd year now with them
the cooler fleeces are great because they fit the horse over tack when travelling if you need to have horse tacked in trailer.
The bandages are not bad at all and the numnahs are perfect
With regards to the breeches they are brilliant of all the pairs of breeches i have they are the ones which i choose to wear first they are so comfortable and the sticky seat is great.
The black buckets thay had are the best thing ever and are very durable

So i would not say their stuff is "cheap" as if you look at some of the major equestrian stores when they have sales or when they are at the RDS
they are even "cheaper" and sometimes the quality is less than the stuff that LIdl & Aldi have

Dont knock it until you try it i say . :)

ooo, didn't know about the hats, I never checked myself but was told they weren't up to standard. I suppose it makes sense that they wouldn't be cutting corners on something that could mean the difference between being ok and having a serious injury, but I already have a hat anyway lol. It's heavy though, I'd like one of those hats with the light coloured straps, they are so comfy and nice looking as well.

did they do saddle cloths at all the last time? they seem really expensive to buy considering they are just a padded square of material o.O so it'd be nice to find a cheaper one there rather than paying out like €20.

I think the main issue with the hats is that they should really be fitted by someone who knows what they are doing... a service that lidl by its nature cannot provide. A hat is something people should be spending money on anyway imo.

    I've lots of their stuff.
    Saddlecloths are really nice
Chaps are grand if they fit you (I really like them)
jodhpurs are a weird fit, but the quality is good.
The saddle soap is supposed to be quite good
    Halters and leadropes are perfect
Buckets are good, strong and useful.
    Schooling whip is fine.
The rugs arent fantastic (I only got the fleece cooler).
I thought the travel boots could be stiffer, but they're good value

Thats all I can think of at the moment.

I dont think theres any real advantage to waiting for the special though, its not that much cheaper than regular shops or online.

I totally agree with you fits about the hat should be fitted by someone who knows their job
But there are plenty of tack shops around the country who sell anything to anyone who has money! so yes i think for items such as safety equipment hats back protectors etc you cannot compromise safety you need advice on proper fit etc

I was just making the observation that the standard of hats sold in Lidl Aldi are up to current standard .

Their exercise bandages are fantastic, I have countless sets of them! :o Their schooling whips and saddle cloths are also pretty good... Wouldn't touch most of the other stuff though... Oh, and their hoof oil does the job for the price :D

That is pretty much the standard price everywhere. Is comfort not important??

yes but why pay double for something, if you can get it just as good for half the price. *shrug*

I tried them too! The one in the green tin that's supposed to have algae or something in it for their coats was mighty - you could really see the colour deepening in their coats.

The hats dont have the kitemark though so therefore arent up to standard and oyu wont be allowed wear them in the majority of competitions. Also i had a small prob with the lead ropes as one day my horse was being a bit bargy so i grabbed it closer to the headcollar and the whole thing just came off..

I got the travelling boots and thought they were great. Would by their stuff again.

I dont think this is true. I've checked 5 hats we've purchased between 4 months and past 7 years ago, including one bought from Aldi (or possibly Lidl 2 years ago). None of these has the kitemark (the inverted triangle indicating compliance with British Standards). All 5 hats including Aldi and 3 Cascos have the 'CE' mark which essentially superceded the kitemark in this country and the EU. Like the kitemark the 'CE' mark is merely an indication that the manufacturer/supplier has complied with all relevant EU standards - EN1384 seems to be the most relevant and is often also included in the text on a hat. One hat also has 'TUV' the german equivalent of the BS, but also includes 'CE'.

There is a more stringent standard for high performance helmets ISEN14572 (Irish Standard European Norm). Other international standards include PAS015 or ASTM F1163, which are listed as acceptable, in addition to EN1384, as prerequisites by some organisers.

I cant see why any organisation would insist solely on a symbol which has been superceded in this country.

As regards quality - the Aldi hat was the worst - it never lost its structural integrity just cosmetic - but then it was at least 1/3 cheaper than our others.

Thats because they have a quick release catch..... which opens when you pull on it! common sense usually prevents that humilitation!

whatsyourquota, that's so if the horse is tied to something and he gets spooked if he jerks back it will fall off instead of him continuing to struggle and possible injuring himself badly. (if your going to tie a horse to something i.e. a fence you need to use a quick release knot, preferably tied onto a bit of string/baling twine rather than the fence so it will snap easily)

that is unless the headcollar actually broke for no reason, nylon is usually very strong though. that's why it's recommended that you turn out the horse in a leather headcollar as leather breaks easier should he get caught on a branch or something.
