... if I'm already running Spybot and Avast!.

I hear Windows Defender eats up a lot of resources, so it would be nice to be able to swithc it off and rely on the good old freeware alternatives.

    Any opinions?

    :D don't know tbh

i think the best way to keep malware off your computer is to restrict access to critical
parts of it (take away administrator privileges)..this is usually just a simple matter of installing
normal user account ..then enforcing everyone to use this while browsing the internet.

it makes perfect sense to do this.
    net user internet /add

theres lots of spyware, of course...i don't like anti-virus scanners or spyware programs,
    i think they're all crap.

Firefox/Noscript/Firekeeper the holy trinity of web browsing :), a 3rd party app. like Linkscanner doesn't hurt either. If you're really worried run them inside something like Sandboxie.

Well IE 7 can also be run without scripting support natively, no need for a plug-in

What do you mean exactly by that? Did you program some part of it or what?

The difference is that noscript is opt-in per site / per session.

If you start IE without scripting how do you turn it on for a particular page ? Would be nice if there was an "open this link with / without scripts" option

One nice way to do it is to have "open this page in IE" / "open this page in firefox" extensions added so you can jump between browsers.

Defender came with Vista Ultimate Feb 2007 on my rig, and in over a year, it has never detected one case of spyware, adware, or malware.

I tried that Noscript and it drove me nuts. Almost worse than having a virus, I thought; all those annyoing messages everytime I went on a new page.

    Thanks but no thanks!

You can get rid of Windows Defender, definitely not needed.

NoScript is pretty good, but found it annoying myself for some sites. Use a program like SpywareGuard for real-time protection
