    Hi,
Was looking at buying an external hard drive which can be accessed over a wireless home network. I was looking at the Western Digital My Book World Edition II 1TB NAS (http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=332166 but the reviews seem pretty poor.

What I'd like to have is to be able to access this hard drive wirelessly at anytime, wether its plugged into a PC or not?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Pat

I use this enclosure from Maplin. Just fit an IDE harddrive. Works great for me.
This is hardwired but can be accessed wirelessly via my wireless gateway/router. Has inbuilt ftp server also.

NAS's are a great idea. Not to step on degsie's toes, but be careful with enclosures - they may be loud, vibrate excessively or run hot (the last two could leave you shafted by a premature hdd death)

other than that - just check the bandwidths good!

thanks for the help guys. i have one other quick question.

i've eventually decided on the Zyxel NSA-220 NAS With RAID and i've picked out a nice 750 gb harddrive. The wireless router i'm using in the house is the Belkin N Wireless Modem Router.

How would I set up this NAS? Is it just a case of pluggin it into one of the wired ports for pcs on the router?

    Thanks for the help

Yeah, just hardwire it to a spare port. You can assign a static/dynamic ip for the NAS. Just be careful that the NAS is not set up as a DHCP server if your router has this enabled already. You can also assign the NAS a workgroup name for file sharing etc.

Another thing to look out for is location of the device. Somewhere cool, and where it won't vibrate, or cause irritation cause of noise

I'm not really down with the speed of these things. I know they differ but in comparison to file transfer over a wired USB 2.0 connection between a laptop and an external HD how would they compare, over a wireless network that is?

Also to OP peustace, how has yours worked out so far?

    Thanks.
