This guy has got good reviews in magazines..

    http://www.artemis-hunting.com/index.html

best contact him and he will guide you through the gun import process. You'll need to get a Euro pass from your local gardai here.

    Diana are good too. http://www.diana.dk

hey does anyone know the price of transporting the rifle?
and how is it done-- does the gun club organize this for you?

I've been looking at the whole Eastern Europe boar hunting trip and the 2 big issues for our group was,
    Minimum caliber is .243
    Transport of firearms.

Still looking at a few places where firearms can be rented. Was looking at Diana.dk alright but when the fellow inside the front cover is one on the lads seen on that hunting show on BBC2 on Sunday night (currently another thread) with the whole shoot fish in a barrel hunting trips :(

Depends on the airline. Sometimes nothing- otherwise the same as golf clubs etc.. make sure the airline will carry it! (Forget about Ryanair). Airlingus will take em, sometimes you get charged €35 other times not (depends on the check in person), have a laser/credit card handy in case you get charged because they wont take cash at the check in desk in Dublin.

A lot of the EU countries have lenient legislation when it comes to hunting and sporting firearms. For example in Belgium a hunting permit doubles up as a firearms licence for hunting and sporting arms. Germany is quite similar to the best of knowledge.

What you should do if you want to bring your own is get your Euro pass and check with the relevant consulate or embassy. They'll be able to tell you for sure.

Even check with the particular shoot operator. They could be well able to sort you out with equipment needed for an extra fee.

As for transport, Aer Lingus allows firearms for the same fee as a bag of golfclubs. For other airlines check individually. Don't bother with ammo unless you have a suitable box for air transport and it's cheaper on the continent anyway. Ryan Air is a no go as mentioned before.

well i dont see .243 being a problem
its the smallest caliber you can use on wild boar in america- and obviously maybe in most of Europe

Terrier are you planing to go hunting with a .22lr ? :D

and even with .243 you must get a nice shot placement- especially if you hunting in Romania- dont be surprised if you see a boar the size of a cow :)

A lot of hunting agents/guides won't let you use a calibre less than .270 on wild boar and for good reason, they need a lot of stopping. As far as I know the minimum bullet energy allowed in Poland is 2000Joules at 100m.

Not a problem of me but quite a few lads interested have only .223s which means a hunting operator that you can hire firearms..

Stupid question maybe but is it driven boar you're after ? If that's the case it might be well worth your while finding out if shotgun slugs are permitted and take your good trusted shottie with you. They're superb for stopping power at relatively short distances and if the hunt is well organised the boar won't be breaking far from the guns and you'll be able to tell the direction he's coming from the barking and yelping of the dogs.

    helpful thread,
is there any special case needed on aerlingus? will a double padlocked plastic dokosport case be ok? or must it be metal?
it's only to bring back an airgun for a friend so don't want to spend more on the case than the gun( have the paperwork needed already)

As far as I know they take stuff like the Storm and Peli cases, which are plastic, so I imagine it'd be fine.

Transported a shotgun on Aer Lingus once. Used a plastic case with a padlock and had no bother at all.

can you bring ammu in the case with the rifle?

Apparently it's more hassle than it's worth, much better and cheaper to buy it over there, as well as better variety.

Croatia, has got expensive in recent years to hunt in.Serbia is a good bet.But be careful down there, especially in the forests .There is still alot of unexploded ordinance lying around from the last set to down there in the 90s.Somthing like six German hunters were killed there when their transport tractor hit an uncleared AT mine in 1998 going up a forest path to go boar hunting.Rumania is cheap, exellent boar and bear hunting in the Carpathian alps[Dracula country] but you will see why they are all up here in Ireland. It is a hole!!!Better it is a mafia controlled crime ridden poverty hole!!Weigh that one up carefully.

One that alot of folks miss.Southern Spain,Catalonia.Great waterfowl, and game bird hunting, boar, and red deer. Not too bad price wise for West Europe.
No one in West Europe will allow you to hunt boar with 223. 243 is bare minimum.IMO still way to little.Start in the .3 calibres for boar or a12GA with slugs.

For what my experiance is worth.Book from a reputable hunting tour operator.Especially going out to the East,as you can run into some right rippoff merchants there.
Dont just go by their glossy brochure,we have been duped a couple of times in seeing great accomadation in castles manor houses, only to find out that said castle was last renovated when the Wehrmacht passed thru there, going to, and coming from Russia and hadn't been touched since!!
Get references from hunters who have been there. If they are genuine they will be only too happy to pass on referees from satisified hunters.
Make double damn sure that your contract is read and understood, especially fine print like state trophy fees, tropthy measurements, delivery and preparation of same. Also that you have one guide who can speekee English fluently.Or that you speak the native lingo ..that is very important.
Agree beforehand on the max size of a trophy head you want, you would be surprised how quickly that old gammy stag becomes a trophy animal of gold medallion status once shot. Finally, make sure that if you cant go there is a refund policy ,and that applies for accomadation, guides, transport, etc as well.

Renting guns can always be a hit and miss affair[no pun intended].
Do you really want to risk a trip of a lifetime on a gun that you have never seen, fired or shoulderd? It is a PITA to get your gun out there but if you shoot it well, why use a total strange gun and risk screwing up that one in a lifetime shot??

Best for travelling airlines with firearms
British Isles; Aer Lingus,British Airways,if you avoid the UK.They are just too anal about anything that goes Bang over there anymore.
On the Continent...Lufthansa hands down.No fuss ,no big deal,so long as all your paperwork is there, and they fly to most East countries with good hunting.German airports are no big deal to travel thru with firearms, again with your paperwork in order.

I'm myself from eastern Europe - the reason i put down Croatia and Romania its cause its in that direction and wanted to know how much will cost to get the rifle that far

only problem for me would be down here Ireland- getting all paper work - the rest is sorted - no need for translator :D, accommodation ( can stay in my house ) yes it is a hole like Romania as well ( even worse) but i know how the system works- so i can handle it ;)

its not anything close to Romania or Croatia( hunting potential) but the boar population is somewhere between 2000-2500, + same for fallow deer, 200-300 boar licenses given out every year

in 2007 prices i would pay - 200 euros for license + 15-20 euros for every day i hunt --- going there during the summer i'll find out more info -- only prob getting the gun there --- theres no direct flight - one airline will take the rifle and 2nd ??

i checked some websites and Romania didnt look that cheap to me-- Grizzly did u yourself go hunting there?????

    QUOTE]

If you are travelling to the Uk, by ferry, Irish ferries do not allow firearms onboard anymore. stena still do.

The Uk has tightened up alot, but it is worth informing the port police before you depart, it saves hours in the long run

    Hi CZ,
No,I didnt go personally on that trip,my cousin In Germany did with another hunting pal,and they said it was cheap. But the whole thing ,accomadation, transport ,food etc was dire. That ruined it for them, nothing worse than coming back from a hard days hunting to bad accomadation and worse food.
This was two years ago,so maybe they are already adapting to EU prices??
The airline .Only way around that is check your bags thru to the first airport.Recheck them in in the second airline check in.It depends on where you do this. Some airlines/airports will allow a direct check thru to destination, others wont.Other choice is simply get as close as possible to your destination by plane then drive or take public transport to your meeting point with the guide.

I'm just back from belarus went pike fishing for a few days, i also tuck time to meet the director of a hunting ground of which stands on 24000 hecters waiting on prices to be faxed to me i'm going to try orginse a trip for meself & a few friends in october prices seam fairly good but waiting for the paper work before i get to excited, its like a hunter paradise out there so much land , lakes , rivers, forests. I'l post all prices ect when i get them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15 cz

Yes Belarus is kind of a hunting paradise- the country is flat and most of it is covered by forests
going there during summer for couple days- not for hunting thou

it would probably be cheaper than Romania or Croatia- i actually never thought of it- i might in future try it myself - my uncle lives there hes in wood processing business so he knows every single corner of those woods down there- + it will be easier for me to get with the gun in there + cheaper :D
