NTL Cable Question

Basic question but before I go changing stuff I wanted to check here first

I got NTL Broadband in. I had, like most houses, a splitter outside the house which sent the cable upstairs and also into the sitting room.

When they installed the Modem they used the cable being sent upstairs and split it. One line then into modem and 1 line into the TV

What I want to know is can I simply split the cable downstairs the same way and put the modem on that line ?

I assume I can as the broadband would be on each cable ??

Technically yes but splits are never a good idea unless done properly they can cause a degradation of the signal
