Patio advice

Was looking up some sites on how to install a patio, with paving slabs, basically I've dug down and added a mix of hardcore and now im ready to add the sand to screed, someone has suggested putting some plastic on the hardcore and putting some holes in it for drainage, then the sand, this will help guard againstweeds, and also protect against sinkage..

is it a good idea to use soil/hardcore/plastic sheet/sand, or just leave the soil/hardcore/sand.

    Total newbie btw.

Put the plastic down as weeds are a pain. B&Q have a perforated sheet for this.

I did mine last year with compacted sand and the sheet. No problems since.
