    Hi Guys,

Not sure if this is the right place but...

If you want to become self-employed do you have to register as such or just file your returns at the end of the tax year?

    Thanks.

You don't need to register as a sole trader or anything like that. As you say, you just need to pay extra tax at the end of the year.

If you're self employed you do have to register as a sole trader with the revenue unless you have a limited company and are employed by that.

    Have a look here

    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/employment/types-of-employment/self-employment/self-employment-as-an-individual

"In order to set up as a sole trader you must register as self-employed for income tax with the Revenue Commissioners."

machalla would be right, you would have to register to become self employed. it doesnt matter if you are a sole trader or a limited company, you still have to register. you would need to set up the limited company before you can be employed by it. they are both easy enough to set up but you will require a bit more information for the limited company.

check out the Company Registrations Office at www.cro.ie and you can do most of it online. depending on what type of business it is going to be you can decide which suits your needs best. i know setting up as a sole trader is only a few euro where as setting up as a limited company is a bit more expensive. but the benefits of a limited company are far greater than being a sole trader. and as i said, depending on what business you intend doing sometimes a limited company can be the safer option.
