Erasmus Student from Italy

    Hi everybody,
I'm Claire from Italy and I'm coming to Cork for 9 months to study at UCC (arrival in sept).
As in Italy everything is different, I was wondering if it's better to book an accommodation on campus or not.
    Can anybody help me?
I've got another problem, I have an allergy to moquette... Does anybody know if moquette is everywhere or I can find a place with parquet, at least in the bedrooms?

    Thanks in advance

    Claire

    Hi Claire,
You're lucky to be doing Erasmus in Cork. Im a student there at the moment. I did erasmus in Genova 2006/2007 :).
Campus Accomodation is probably the best for meeting students...I dont know I live at home. As for Moquette...I think you mean Carpet (the Irish love Carpets!!) You'll just have to ask when you are looking for accomodation. Parquet...do you mean wooden floors? That should not be too difficult to find!!
Ask me if you need any help!!
    Fortuna buona,
    Maxine.

    Thanks ;)
I looked at a couple of accommodations yesterday, but the great majority are full (for the next year!), for example Mardyke. Which one do you think is the best? If u want I can send u privately a list of accommodation I've found online.
Because of this I was thinking about private apartments to share with other people, so I can visit them before accepting.
What r u studying at UCC?
I've also seen "The Village" student accommodation and seems pretty good. What do you think about?

    Thanks again!

Cregane Hall (021 4871029 http://www.creganehall.com) has parquet floors and no carpet at all in the apartments. It's the only student complex I can think of without it. However it's rather expensive and a not too bad 15 minutes walk from campus (not far from Victoria Lodge 'campus'

    These might be some use:

I think The Village is very far (even a bus journey away) but someone else might confirm.

Brookfield also has some apartments with all wooden floors (www.brookfieldcork.ie)

The Village is closer than Cregane Hall

    Where is the Village?
I thought it was that massive complex out by CIT?

It's at Victoria Cross... 5 min to UCC!
However, I decided to search on my own when I will be there, I think it's probably the best choice... So I can be sure there's no carpet ;)

Hello, I'll also be an italian erasmus student (next year) there in Cork.
I'd ask if someone know when it's good to start to find the accomodation and if it's always possible to find it at a cheaper price than on campus.:)
    Thanks everyone
    Greetings

There are a few student accomodation complexes (privately owned)
The closest to UCC are probably Brookfield, Victoria Mills, The Village and Deans Hall. There might be a few others that I can't think of.

Generally these are of the same standard as the different UCC Campus options, and around the same price. Also, you would need to book one of these very soon as some of them may even be full already. To be honest I think Campus Accomodation would be better (I imagine they keep some places for international students) University Hall, The Spires and Farranlea Hall are all very nice, and Victoria Lodge isn't bad either, with Castlewhite being the lowest standard of accomodation (albeit I think it has been renovated recently so it should be ok)

Other than that you could get a private house. A lot of the houses I have been in aren't the nicest, and getting a good one would probably require coming over to Ireland around now to look for one. But check www.daft.ie for a look

From my own experience (8 years in UCC) you should NOT leave your search for accommodation until you get here. It will be too late and you will end up either living very far away from campus or somewhere not very comfortable/modern. Many students will have their accommodation for next year booked already as UCC students have only a few more weeks until the exams in May. Even many first year students will usually book accommodation when filling in their application form in February, rather than waiting to find out that they have a place on their chosen course in August.

Contact the Accommodation Office and see the Student Union information on finding accommodation. The International Education Office may also be able to help, and their website has a lot of information about life in Cork and UCC.
