Anyone got any tips on where to start, what to say etc?

Ive been mailin a lot the last week for photo passes, and got a good few fast replies

But some of the bands are bein promoted by bigger companies, which need you to be doing an assignment for a paper or a magazine

    Thanks in advance

    Why approach the papers/mags then?

Contact the promoters of the events, or the artists. The direct route might have a much better effect, especially when you just want to build your portfolio.

Most papers/mags won't use you unless you can show a portfolio of work.

I guess you're going to try and jump into the deep end and go for the bigger bands which will be much more difficult to cover.

I have been going straight to the bands, but a lot dont have a contact section on their site anymore, and a lot are being promoted by big Irish promoters, even though the bands themselves aint that big, and the gigs are on in pretty small venues

Its the promoters too im contactin, but they need you to be workin for a mag/paper

If you are still trying to build up your portfolio before you want to approach the bigger bands, start by taking photos of punk and hardcore gigs in places like the Voodoo, Lower Deck, Eamon Dorans.... you dont need a pass and you dont need to ask, and they usually provide nice lively shots!

Then when you have a portfolio approach magazines (and online ones) and offer your sevices, they will then provice passes/contacts.

Also contacting the bands Press Agent if the Promoter isnt of help (those that shall not be names are the worst for replies) - for photo pass can be the best route.

my advice is based on me doing music photography for about 6-7 years. it's all about persistance, hard work, luck and networking ability, very little to do with talent or skill.

have a read of my music photography faq at www.aaaphotos.org/faq.htm

the advice there is what has got me to the stage of having worked for major record labels, national papers, international magazines on a regular basis
