Internet Troubles

    Hi,

(Not to sure if this is the right place to post this, so move if necessary)

My uncle recently bought a computer from Dell. He wants to hook it up to the internet. His phone service provider (Gaelic), told him they would they give him wireless, but they never sent him out anything, because they told him all he needs is a wireless router. When we bought the wireless router (Belkin G+ Router), we began to install it untill we hit a snag, in that we also need a modem.

Does anyone know where we could get a compatible modem. Also if we get the modem do we necessarily need a router in anyway. And since it is a static PC, does he really need wireless?

    Thanks in Advance,
    Darren

If your uncle is getting broadband from Gaelic, then they would have sent him a DSL modem. This could be wired or wireless. If it's not wireless, you can either replace it with a wireless modem/router combo or connect the modem to wireless router.

If his PC is static and close to the phone port, there's no need for wireless. Wireless is only an advantage if you have a laptop, PSP, or want to network computers together without wires across the house.

However, I have a feeling that the real issue is that you never signed up to get broadband from Gaelic. If you have, they would have sent you a modem, no way you can get online without it. So I'd check with Gaelic to see if your uncle is signed up for DSL.

Edit: I've just read Gaelic's website. They don't necessarily send out a modem, you can either supply your own, rent one from GT, or buy one from GT.

They clearly aren't great with the tech side of things, they keep calling what is actually a dsl modem, a router. ;)

So if you don't want to buy one from GT, choose one from here:

    Just avoid Belkins, they're shit

I kind of thought, that might have been the issue!
