Tweaking alignment

I hooked up one of the Lidl dish and receivers over the weekend and got mixed results.

I pointed the dish in the broad direction that the other dishes on nearby houses were pointing and used the beeper to roughly locate <some satellite>.

When I turned on the TV the receiver was telling me that there was no signal - I wasn't really surprised since all I had done was pretty much point the thing at the sky.

However, when I went into the auto scan menu it seemed to locate a couple of channels - this much was promising. Unfortunately the only channels it found were all pay channels and the display came back with "encrypted".

I was beginning to wonder whether I was actually pointed at anything when I noted that the EPG seemed to be working - I could see the now/next information. Then I checked teletext and I could see a good bit of stuff - I can't remember the channels I got teletext for, but one of them was comedychannel.nl

In my mind there are three main possibilities for the problems - 1) I'm not sure my cable assembly is quite up to scratch, so there may not be great connectivity, - 2) the dish needs to be moved a little bit left, a little bit right, a little bit up or a little bit down, or -3) I'm pointed at some satellite that only does encrpyted channels.

I will be giving it a go again later today, but does anyone know from the symptoms above (teletext and now/next but no image, some pay channel signal but no free to air) whether my main problem is alignment, cable quality, wrong satellite or a combination of the three ?

I'm sure I have seen some links here before giving guidance for aligning dishes, but I can't find them. Right now, I just want to get anything from any specific satellite. I don't have a specific set of channels that I must get at the moment.

    Thanks,

    z

It could be that you're pointing the dish at 19.2E:

    http://www.flysat.com/astra19.php
    http://www.flysat.com/satlist.php

If you go to the comedy channel nl again, and press the info button, you'll see information on that channel. If it says "12515 H" anywhere, you're definately on 19.2E. (If you note the frequency and polarity of a channel you find, it's usually quite easy to determine what satellite you're pointing at from the link above, and associated pages for other satellites).

If you want to get the channels on 28.2E (BBC's, ITV's, etc), as you stand behind the dish, you want to move it so that it points more to your left, and also down a few degrees.

You also need to skew the LNB to ensure you can get all channels at a particular satellite location. Info should be in the manual, if not google "LNB skew".
