my brother and his girlfriend went and volunteered and it was the best thing they ever did, it is a great organisation and you will come back a different person!!

the kids are great and you meet other volunteers and have fun also and you make lasting friendships!!

    Best of luck

I wonder about the benefits of short term placements like these for the children involved. Often, they get very attached to volunteers, and like most institutionalised kids in orphanages have few healthy long-term relationships they can rely on. Short terms placements with a lot of different people can be confusing and difficult for them in the long run.

In responce to that, I've been to this orphanage twice, and literally within a day the girls have u wrapped around their little fingers...a lot of volunteers go back again and again and the girls remember them and i'm sure look forward to people returning. In fact I would think, the volunteers get more attached than some of the children.

I think the two week program is great. It's really tiring work and can be emotionally draining. This way the girls get a fresh batch of volunteers every two weeks, and so theres plenty energy on both sides. It also makes it possible for all kinds of people to travel out...people with full time jobs, mothers, fathers...not just students who can afford to take 3 or 4 months off at a time.

For anyone thinking of going out there...GO, please...you seriously need to meet these girls...you'll gain experience, learn about different culture, see a different welfare system, and probably realise we don't have it so bad in Ireland...but most of all you'll have fun and meet lots of great people from all walks of life...

I've been there three times at the orphanage in Hincesti. All the girls ( there are about 350 ) have some disability so the first time that you meet them can be a little daunting but you acclimatise very quickly. These kids are wonderful and give you so much. You will have a great experience if you go. The first trip is limited to 2 weeks. Subsequent trips can be for longer periods.
