i recently got some active peltors from the US. worked out about 50 euro for a pair. dont even bother with them. got 2 sets, one side of one of them doesnt work, and it'd cost too much to send back and forth for repair. very fiddly anyway for replacing battery's, you basically have to disassemble each side. reckon i'll be getting deben ones myself soon. around 120 euro, but it has an external battery compartment, and hopefully they're made with better quality than the peltors.

Peltor comtacs, used by the army and NPWS after tons of research. They are Top class, i have been using them for years now, not cheap though.

Also called the swat-tac. Link below

I have Peltors but I only use them in conjunction with custom fitted earplugs. I wouldn't use them on their own.

Problem is your shooting glasses - the ear pieces raise the foam cushioning enough to render them and any other muffs practically ineffective. They are handy on their own for refereeing but for shooting I'd make sure to use the plugs as well.

In fact the best form of ear protection is the cheap foam plugs that you roll up between your fingers and insert into the ear canal.

I had the Deben electronic ones for 2 years of clay shooting - now I also have a bad case of tinnitus

I wear foam disposable ear plugs inside Peltor Optime 3.

I'm very suspicious of the electron models now - do they really kick in in time

Have to totally agree with you. I don't think the electronic models, no matter how good or expensive they are, kick in in time.

As I said in a previous post, the disposables are the best - they have the highest db rating of them all!

I have sets for people starting off shooting (clays) with muffs AND ear plugs and I always tell them to wear both!

On the question of whether or not they kick in in time.

I have a pair of these Peltors:
    http://www.botachtactical.com/peltac7ster.html
which I use for pistol shooting - mostly on an indoor range with up to 10 guys firing fullbore pistol and they work fine.

I find that the arms of my glasses so not hold them up off my ears and they kick in fine - they create a sort of static noise when a shot goes off rather that cut out altogether which makes it a bit easier to hold a conversation on the range.

They actually amplify ambient noise quite well so you can hear far better than if you were not wearing them.

They would be far too blulky for clays - I wear low profile passive earmuffs for that and I haven't done a lot of centrefire rifle but they would be too bulky for that also.

I Forgot to mention that I had a pair of Zems - which I broke and and awaiting a replacement pair at the moment which I will be using for clays once I get them back.

They are passive but they are VERY good and do not limit your ability to hear sounds other than those above the rated decibel level.

I have used them for both pistol (outdoor ranges) and clay shooting and they are great.

Their only downside is that if you are on the range all day - e.g. a pistol shoot - where you cannot take them off at all - your ears tend to get sore from the constant pressure. If you take them off every so often that is not an issue.

    I ordered mine here:

This is the gang who make them

Invincible did you see the price of the Harris Bipods about $60 for the non swivel or $100 for the swivel type. BUT I could not get more than 1 item at any one time into the basket and checkout. I'll see how the muffs work out what with customs and all.
    CliveJ..............

Well CliveJ,there's a fair choice of Harris bipods, seem great value, although I don't know their usual price.Which one would you choose?

Invincible I got a harris in 13-27 swivel €60 second hand but perfect (I think thats the size) for my son who is getting a CZ .223. But as I will be doing a lot of bench rest target shooting with my CZ style .22lr I will get the 6-9 non swivel spring return. Its just about right for the bench at Midlands :D. But at thoses prices I may end up getting the 9-12 and 13-27 non swivel types as well.
But first I will wait until I get the ear muffs first to see if I have to pay any custom duty on the $55.
