I have recorded some voice audio onto my laptop and i want to be able to take the 10secs out of the 1 min long audio. i.e. just take 10secs so it will be a clip on its own rather than having to play the full thing.

Try Audacity, it is free and works well for most media types. You just have to cut the piece out and drop it into a new file, bobs your uncle.

    +1 for audacity

    See http://audacity.sourceforge.net/about/features for details.

It can open .wav, .au, .aif, .mp3 and .ogg. You can export to .wav or .mp3 if you have the lame encoder installed

Does voice recorder still ship with windows? It's very straightforward to use. I found audacity a bit unintuitive myself.

Yeah, it is under XP as Programs->Accessories->Entertainment->Sound Recorder.

It would be crazy difficult to do it with Sound Recorder :D

What are you on about? open the file, save out the bit you want. Job done.

In this case in Audacity, all the OP would need to do is use the cursor to highlight the piece they want to keep and then >File >Save Selection As...

    Very quick and easy.

I come from a sound engie background so the first time I ever looked at Audacity I knew what I was doing, but I can imagine it could be unintuitive alright. The most finicky thing about it is getting used to the zoom and selction tools, which are different to how you would expect them to be, thats what I found anyway. I would say thought Khannie, its worth giving it another look at some point, it really is a fantastic application.

I had heard that before using it alright. I did stick with it for what I wanted it for and got used to it. If I were using windows (and I'm not) I'd still use sound recorder for basic editing of a wav file though.
