I bought one about 4 months ago, its a beautiful instrument, best purchase I've ever made but be prepared to re-learn music theory in indian!

If your really looking to get into it I'd advise to spend as much as possible on it and stear clear of the cheap ones, as with most thing you get what you pay for.

I got mine through a dealer in london, had to travel but was well worth taking it from the shop and knowing it would get home safely. They are extremely fragile, the slightest knock can crack it open like an egg so ordering online is a bit dangerous...

    Whats your budget like?

Well too be honest I was just after watchin the beatles anthology and seeing George Harrison's sitar lesson with Ravi Shankar blow me away...Dont really have a budget but id just want something 2 jam with.I was looking on e-bay there is nothin there very surprizing.I know they wouldnt start off cheap anyway but how much are the low range ones? What shop did you pick yours up in? Id say on Denmark stret anyway was it?:D

    Thanks

I haven't a clue what street I was on tbh, don't even remember the shop name lol. Something indian anyway  You should be looking to spend about 500/600 for something playable. A full size Calcutta student sitar (double gourd if possable, makes its alot more resonant) is what you should be looking for. 7 main strings and 11-13 sympathetic string.

If you trust the likes of DHL go for buckingham music but the only way to find a sitar imo is to play everything in the shop and decide from there.

I love it man, I stopped playing guitar for the first 2 months of owning it lol, the hours litrally fly by when your playing it. The two are very different, everything from the fingering style to the plek used.

Think of it like moving onto a new instrument all together. Theres not many skills you can port from the guitar to the sitar apart from a good ear and some callisus on the fingers tbh...

A wise man once said "Turn off your mind, relax and float down stream". A sitar can put you in that state of mind :)
