Backdoor.Win32.IRCBot.cht

I received the "Hey, is this really you?" virus and scanned my computer to find out that it's other name is "Backdoor.Win32.IRCBot.cht" I can find information to get rid of every single virus but it. I used BitDefender to scan the computer again; it deleted one of the problems, but couldn't disinfect or delete the rest of it. I can't find any antivirus scanner that would other than ones that force you to purchase their product. Could I have some help with getting rid of it?

If it helps at all, here's what it does:
    - I'm on Messenger when after a certain period of time, all the windows close and I can't make them reappear if I click on a contact. In Task Manager, no programs are showing up either, yet if I close Messenger, it says there are windows still open that I need to close
    - Then when I sign back in, it sends the message and link to everybody online
-Additionally, it's making my internet slow, and seems to be invincible. I don't want to have to reformat everything, 'cause I wouldn't be able to reinstall everything 'cause I lack the CDs for the operating system and such.

So if you could help, that would be greatly appreciated, please.

    Hello

Please download MsnCleaner.zip and Save it to your Desktop.
    • Unzip it to the Desktop.
    • Now reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit Enter.
    • Double-click MsnCleaner.exe to run it.
    • Click the Analyze button.
    • A report will be created once after you finish scan.
    • If it finds an infection, click the Deleted button.
    • Now, please reboot back to normal mode.
    • Please post the contents of C:\MsnCleaner.txt in a reply to this post along with a new HJT log.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
    • Close all other windows before proceeding.
    • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
    • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
    • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

    Looks fine

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan. Check all the boxes and click Start Scan
    • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
    • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
    Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

    Download RootAlyzer to your desktop.
    • Unzip it to a folder on your desktop, close all windows, and run RootAlyzer.exe
    • Click Ok to the two prompts and let the program run it's Quick Scan automatically, this should only take a few seconds
    • Click the Deep Scan tab, check all the boxes and click Ok. Let the scan run un-interrupted, it will take a few minutes.
    • When it is finished scanning, a Log tab will appear at the top, click that. Highlight all the text, right-click on it and press Copy.
    • Paste that information back here by pressing Ctrl + V, or right-click and press Paste. Also mention if you had any problems.

I think the problems might be gone now.
I scanned with MBAM, and while it was scanning, AVG found the two viruses, which I healed and deleted from the virus vault. At the end of the scan, MBAM displayed six infected objects, which were successfully deleted. However, when I started doing the deep scan with RootAlyzer, it wouldn't show me the Log tab after it was finished.

    Here's the log from MBAM:

    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.10
    Database version: 595
    Scan type: Full Scan (A:\|C:\|D:\|)
    Objects scanned: 127020

Thank you so much for all the help you've given me so far.

Your log is clean ! We need to do a few things

You can delete the tools that we used

Now we need to create a new System Restore point.

Click Start Menu > Run > type (or copy and paste)

    %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Next goto Start Menu > Run > type

    cleanmgr

Click OK, Disk Cleanup will open and start calculating the amount of space that can be freed, Once thats finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen, click the More Options tab then click Clean up on the system restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created.

To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

    * Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
    http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

    * To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:
    SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here

    * SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

    Make Internet Explorer more secure
    • Click Start > Run
    • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
    • Click on the Security tab
    • Click Reset all zones to default level
    • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
    • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
    • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

    * MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

    * Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
    Here

    * Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
    Here

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.

Thank you so much for helping me get through this. However, there are two things I want to ask about:

For one, when I turned on my computer today, the screen had changed from 1024 x 768 to 1280 x 1024 and all the icons on my desktop had moved to a random order. Should I be concerned about that or do computers normally do spontaneous weird things like that?

The other thing: My system configuration utility still has msn.com (one of the viruses I got rid of) as an option to activate. It's currently unchecked, and I want to set the utility back to normal mode so it'll stop popping up every time I turn on the computer... but I'm concerned that it'll activate that one virus again. How can I take it off the startup list?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,970 ✭✭✭ActorSeeksJob

    Hello

Now we need to reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
Double-click the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

    Delete this file in bold

    C:\WINDOWS\msn.com

As for your first Q, that sounds fine.

Your second Q, the virus won't reactivate, all traces are gone when you delete the above file.

Let me know how that goes

I couldn't find the file. Hopefully that means it's deleted, but if it's still on the list, I wonder.

Is there anything else I could do?

    Do this

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
    • Save it to your desktop.
    • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
    • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
      [kill explorer]
      C:\WINDOWS\msn.com
      purity
      [start explorer]

    • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the light Yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Click the red Moveit! button.
    • A log of files and folders moved will be created in the c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder in the form of Date and Time (mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log). Please open this log in Notepad and post its contents in your next reply.
    • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16 LilbunUWiz

    Explorer killed successfully
    File/Folder C:\WINDOWS\msn.com not found.
    < purity >
    Explorer started successfully

OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer - Version 1.0.4.1 log created on 04072008_190351

Apparently it's either non-existant or really good at hiding
