    Hi there

I was wondering what anyone might think

I was nearly wore a pair of leather trousers into the office on Friday, its a dress down Friday.

    Would you consider it inappropriate?

    thanks

    Sondra

No, not for work, unless you want the rep as the office floozy ;)

I've worn all black leather to work, and got no complaints. But I'm not an office worker, rather into fashion and entertainment, so my example would probably not apply to you.

    I'm not an office worker

    Why reply?

Hi thanks for the responses, they aren't quite like that speedboatchase, besides the trousers in the picture look more like rubber.

I don't think they are exactly floozy looking either ,I wore them out and got quite a few compliments anyway thanks

+1. I can't think of anything more inappropriate. Regardless of how "dress down Friday" it is that is taking "dress down" into a whole new territory. It shows a distinct lack of cop-on or savvy to be honest. I think the fact that you posted a thread on it demonstrates you know the answer obviously.

i don't get why anyone in their right minds would wear leather trousers anyway, never mind wearing them into the office, dress down friday or not...!

Hi Sondra! Appropriateness would depend upon a lot of things... Although you are in the office, your industry would make a difference. For example, if you worked for Johnson & Johnson, a very conservative medical research and manufacturing corporation, they would frown on you wearing leathers, even on dress down Friday. But if you worked for one of the large fashion retailers, and you looked good in them, the response would be quite different I would guess. All office protocols are not the same, so for posters not to take that into account is to form sweeping generalisations that might not apply to specific industries.

Also, all company and organisation cultures are not the same irrespective of the industry. Not sure what your specific culture is like, so that might make a difference, too?

An office is a workplace and leather trousers are not acceptable if you want to be taken seriously.

Blue Lagoon works in "So Cal" wherever the fcuk that is and is (also) not to be taken seriously.

Tbh the fact that a company has a "dress down Friday" would suggest to me that it is a formal work dress code the rest of the time. Why else would they have a casual or dress down day?

OK, the fact that I think leather invariably looks tarty I am willing to putting my prejudices aside and concur that if you work for a tattoo parlour or what have you where it may look fine, I still say that it really is not appropriate for an office environment.

Appears that someone has resorted to profanity to make their point, while at the same time generalised that there should be a uniform dress-down-day code for all offices in Ireland, irrespective of office culture or industry? Ironic? Where's Jonathan Swift when you need him? He could offer a Modest Proposal for dress-down-day?

It's irresponsible to give bad advice to someone to boost your own profile or advertise yourself. I've spotted that most, if not all of your posts allude to "So Cal" and think it's all bullsh1t, a Devil Wears Prada fantasy land.

The OP's reputation in their workplace could be damaged by these posts and maybe you should think twice before posting about things you seem to know nothing about.

Unless you want a Ross Gellar moment with baby lotion and talcan powder after you take a piss then I'd avoid them like the plague. Plus they look hideous.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,423 ✭✭✭tinkerbell

No no & no. Casual Friday usully means jeans.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,039 ✭✭✭✭Kintarō Hattori

If you look good in them and wear them appropriately I don't see any reason why not. As look as you wear them with something suitable like a plain blouse and blazer. It's casual friday so you can wear something different. Leather trousers don't necessarily have to be overtly sexy. They can also be smartly casual.
Irish ladies are very conservative when it comes to clothes and certainly far from impartial. As has been pointed out above it also does depend on the company that you work for. If there is a relaxed atmosphere in the office then go for it.

If you think you look good, that the mood is good in the office then why the hell not. Life's too short after all, have some fun.

Not even, in the last two places I worked in, casual Friday meant a polo tshirt and chino's. I just normally turned up in a suit with no tie and kept the jacket off.

I can't think of any firm that would look favourably on leather pants.

I work in an office where people where suits during the week, on dress down fridays jeans or leather are not allowed.

Yeah, I've seen that episode of Friends. It's complete rubbish. Unless you need baby lotion and talcum powder to get them on in the first place (if you do, I recommend you try a bigger size), you're not going to need them later. Leather doesn't spontaneously shrink ffs.

OP, it's impossible to say whether leather trousers would be appropriate or not without knowing how relaxed the dress code is on casual Friday in your workplace. It depends a lot on how you wear them, but even if you look great in them, a lot of people have a very narrow view of what's acceptable and what's not (as has been shown in this thread).

TBH eo980, you have a leather fetish so you're not exactly impartial.

no, not appropriate. If you were unsure enough to make a thread, they aren't suitable. Dress down friday isn't somewhere to wear stuff you'd wear on nights out.

on the other hand, leather trousers :( in general

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,288 ✭✭✭✭ntlbell

If you can pull them off why not.

There's a HR manager in my place who can really carry them off and she still looks profesional.

If you look comfortable in them (most women dont) then i cant see why not

TBH Pythia you do come across as somewhat narrow minded and conservative so I could hardly call you impartial either.

Well, it's certainly better to go with conservative than fetish when we are talking about office wear!

I think in most work places "casual" fridays usually mean "less formal" fridays. Jeans and a blouse would probably be the norm as far as attire goes. I wouldn't be inclined to wear anything that may be borderline on the policy.

Well it wasnt directed at you Miss Fluff, I just thought that fetish was a little strong and If Olwyn can wear them in the Dail I reckon I might get away with it in the office, the person who made the comment would appear to be a Young Blue Shirter, anyway it wasnt meant to be an insult just a little fun....

I know! :)She probably wore them in the Dail and was spoken about for weeks. It was obviously a talking point for you to have heard about it. Trust me when I say they are not appropriate for work, they will not look professional, when it comes to work better to err on the side of caution OP.

    *Gurgle* at eo980's pictures.

In my last job, there were one or two women who wore leather trousers to work on Friday a few times, and there was no fuss about it. It depends where you work, and how big the office and the organisation is. The bigger the office, the more lax things are (in my experience).

op you know yourself how your office will look upon leather in the work place. i think if you look good in them feel confident in them and you wear something plain with them to dress it down then why not? i honestly dont see a problem with them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 170 ✭✭Shinyboots

yea, as long as you feel good in them then wear them!!!

Jesus the amount of bitching on this thread!

OP if you are serious about your career, there's one rule of thumb you can follow: if you are so unsure, that you feel you need advice/support (ie: posting a thread), don't wear it.
