iPod: USB device not recognised - Help!

Was hoping someone here could shed some light on this problem, I've spent the last 4 hours searching Google and trying everything with no joy.

    I've a Dell Latitude D600 with XP sp2, and a 5th generation ipod video.
I've been using both together for about a year with no problems until recently.
When I plug the ipod in, windows won't recognise it and I get an error
[USB Device not recognised, One of the usb devices has malfunctioned]

Ipod will not show in my computer or iTunes. Also it shows up in device manager as "Unknown Device"
It's recognised by both my xbox and stereo, and any other USB device I plug into the laptop is picked up without a problem (Sony MP3, camera, mouse etc.)

I've done the following without any luck
    - Rolled back with a system restore to a date before the problem occured.
    - Installed the latest ver of iTunes
    - Rolled back to sp1 and earlier versions of iTunes
    - Attempted to restart the USB controllers in all manners I can
    - Unplugged the laptop from the mains and removed battery, left until no residual charge remains and connected ipod.

I can't format the ipod its self as it's not picked up.
The only other thing I can think of would be going into the registry here which I'm very reluctant to do as it seems a bit extreme.

    Any help guys?

Sometimes I find not all the usb ports are the same.
If it is trying to charge the unit you can get all sorts of error messages .
I have plugged it back into another port with the original usb cable and it works.
I have gotten this message from ide hard drives and I just unplug and reconnect and it works.

another possibility is that you may have a virus or malware on a video file ?

    Cheers Axton,

I've tried it in every port and same deal.
Just aac files on it, I havn't loaded any videos on to it so a dodgy file looks unlikely.

Could it be that your ipod USB cable is on the fritz? or the connection port on the ipod 5g itself?

I'm starting to get that problem occasionally too having, as you say, been fine for years. Usually though a re-start of the PC sorts it for me thankfully. Occasionally, it has frustratingly stayed for days and I've switched to syncing with a laptop instead. I've three iPods (for various reasons) and it can happen with any of them on the PC but when I sync to my Laptop I haven't ever got the problem. (yet!) Which would point to something being wrong with my PC's handling of USB hubs. Sometimes it won't work, exactly as you describe, but switching to a different hub then will work. But I'm afraid I can't really help you yet as I haven't figured out why myself. Out of interest, are you using a USB hub or connecting the iPod directly to a USB port on the laptop?

Thought that myslelf today Mactard. Nope, have 2 cables, both of which work connecting the iPod to to both the stereo, car dock and xbox.

Not using a hub art, straight into the ports on the laptop, all USB 2.0.
It has me well and truly flummoxed, every other device is picked up on the ports except the iPod.

Ah, that throws my theory out so, I was holding onto the idea my use of two usb hubs had somehow created the problem. Like yourself, I haven't seen it mentioned much on line so it obviously isn't a typical problem but the fact that you are on a laptop and I'm on a PC makes it less likely we are encountering a common hardware related issue. Have you had any general iTunes problems? I've had the Apple Update tell me that there is a new version available, download it and then fail when applying the update, requiring me to make a manual update. That's happened about three times now. Though it sounds like you've been very thorough checking for a software related issue ... I'll keep plugging away and let you know if I discover anything myself but it is definitely a weird one this.
