    Crash fears for missing plane
    Updated 18.12 Sat Apr 05 2008
Rescuers searching for a plane that went missing in bad weather say witnesses spotted it then heard a "loud bang".

The light aircraft disappeared off the radar as it was crossing the Cairngorms in the Scottish Highlands with just the male pilot on board.

A spokesman for the RAF said "reliable witnesses" saw the plane heading south above The Ptarmigan restaurant at the top of the Cairngorm funicular railway, then heard the bang.

The plane left Carlisle at about 9am on Saturday and the alarm was raised shortly before 11am when air traffic controllers lost contact with the pilot.

Rescue teams say the plane could no longer be in the air as it would have run out of fuel at about 2pm.

RAF spokesman Michael Mulford said the reported sighting meant rescuers were focussing their search on a 50-square mile area around the spot where it was last seen.

Mr Mulford said: "We regard the information as reliable.

"The bang was heard about 11am, which is consistent with the loss of radio calls and loss of him on the radar.

"It is all consistent and that's why we are dropping off teams of mountain rescuers at various possible points in the area.

"We are now past the point where he could possibly have fuel, so one way or another he cannot still be flying.

"When you add together the sighting of him flying south and then reports of a loud bang you have to be realistic about what that means."

Weather conditions in the area are described as severe, with poor visibility and snow showers.

Mr Mulford said: "If he has come down in that area then he could well be covered by snow."
