PAYG Top-up Cards: Why don't we have them?

Edit: Can a mod move this to mobile forum? Thanks

Just doing a bit of tidying around the place and found a PAYG top-card I used to use when living in Belfast.

Which got me wondering, why do we have them here in the ROI?
So much easier then typing in a 15 digit code.
Plus it cuts down on that well-know scam of people using camera phones in shops on the receipts and immediately returning them.

For those that haven't seen them, you get a standard card, like an ATM card.
Just ask any newsagent, phone store, etc for maybe £10 on your network and they enter this and swipe your card. A few minutes later your credit is applied to your account.

I know there are posters here who work for the phone companies, why don't we have this?

I agree it would save time and bother. Very handy in the UK.

I have never heard of this scam.

I remember having one for my meteor phone years ago, They called it a 'spark card' or something like that...I could only use it at my local post office though and to get there would involve passing 3 or 4 shops which also sold meteor credit...needless to say I didnt use it often!

I'd say it's a question of convenience for the retailers. Doesn't that machine that gives the codes also do credit/laser card verification?

Some of them can do credit card verification. The vast majority don't.
